The Cyber Landscape and Your Culture of Security

The depth and breadth of cyber threats and challenges faced by health care organizations today has never been greater. As of May 2016, 60 hacks affecting nearly 11 million individuals were listed on the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights "wall of shame," which tallies only major health data breaches. There are many more, including ransomware attacks, that are yet to be included in these tallies.

In addition, there's proposed legislation to elevate the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) role at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to be on par with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) role--both reporting to the Assistant Secretary for Administration at HHS. These news stories underscore the importance of cyber security.

Spending millions of dollars on the latest technologies in an attempt to protect themselves from becoming the next organization in the news is a common, but insufficient, reaction.
