Generations & Technology
The Need to Progress to Attract & Retain Today's Young Talent

Time; it is the prevailing constant, continually marching forward. And yet, a shocking number of businesses today are fixed firmly in past technologies to run their business.

We've discussed the concerns of this topic from both a security and progression standpoint in the past, but one area many leaders do not consider as a direct result of their technology adoption is their ability to attract and retain their industry's top talent. Particularly, young talent entering the workforce in strides over the past few years.

Yes, Millennials are taking over. They are officially the majority generation in the workforce according to recent studies, and our blog discussing generational differences with technology continues to be one of our most read posts of all time.

Clearly, many business leaders today are concerned with appealing to younger professionals. But are you considering how your business tools are influencing whether or not today's tech-savvy generation will give your organization a second glance?

Your workforce impacts your business' success, but your workplace influences your talent pool and turnover.

Millennials have technology expectations.

Their adoption rates and ability to embrace change far exceed earlier generations, and they are entering the workforce with much higher technology standards for employers. But, rather than being annoyed by this, your business should seriously consider how the technology you leverage -- or don't -- impacts the talent pool interested in joining and staying with your organization.

According to 2015 research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half of hiring managers report struggling to find and keep Millennials on their team. Conversely, nearly 60% of Millennials expect to leave their current roles in less than 3 years.

So how do you attract and retain this less-loyal, highly-innovative Millennial generation?

Fostering a culture that embraces technology as an accelerator for your business growth rather than just task completion is a great place to start. View efficiency as a key driver for both your organizational productivity and your team's overall morale.

If one thing is certain, it's that the window of patience has gotten considerably shorter in recent years -- regardless, I would argue, of your generation. When you know the speed and potential in technology today, taking a step backward can feel like you have fallen off a cliff.

Five minutes to pull a single report? You may be thinking it's no big deal, but your technology-driven talent is grabbing another cup of coffee while they wait and searching for their next role, likely outside your business.

Now is the time to start making those innovative decisions you've been putting off for years.
