The Gift of Connected Commerce
It hit me the other day as we were making our way to yet another holiday obligation, kids screaming in the backseat and the dog curiously quiet in the far back -- likely indicating he was currently chowing through the wrapping on my nephew's Star Wars Lego present (spoiler: he was) -- how amazing technology is.

Here we were, miles of road ahead of us with no relief in sight, when I pull up my Starbucks mobile app and order my husband and my favorite beverages with the simple touch of a screen. We take the next exit, arrive at a never-before-visited store in the middle of We're-Not-There-Yet, and ta da; the drinks were hot and ready with no wait and no need to shout through the drive-thru or battle lines indoors. We were on the interstate minutes later, the caffeine-buzz slowly working its way to revive us both of our holiday-induced comas.

Innovation is a glorious thing.

It makes our lives so much easier. All of these interconnected devices and systems simplify and create new avenues for interaction. It was a different experience, but it filled a need at that moment, and this is what meaningful service in the New Year looks like.

But with this technology comes the need for robust solutions in the back-end. An hour or so after my espresso-filled reprieve, I found myself pondering the system Starbucks is leveraging to allow things to run seamlessly on the customer-facing side. After all, that should be main focus of any Internet of Things (IoT) initiative today -- creating a valuable experience -- but the behind the scenes aspect either makes or breaks the delivery for your business.

Gone are the days when you simply went to the counter, ordered and swiped a card. Now payments are running through mobile applications, either vendor-specific like Starbucks' or autonomous solutions like Android or Apple Pay. The point of sale (POS) system requirements for retailers are becoming more complex, and consumers are demanding these mobile pay options across transaction models. This is where a dynamic ERP solution becomes vital to success.

Digital wallets and the IoT platform demand a robust sales ERP module for security and processing and a sound network for stability. Your business will only deliver as much value to your customer as your business management solution provides your team. Connecting your back office functions across your people, process and technology onto one, integrated system allows for automation and acceleration in today's Digital Age. The data gathered on your customer and your operations fuel strategic initiatives like connected devices and mobile commerce, delivering useful information to streamline your processes and provide visibility into progress and growth. It is the tool that will enable your business to respond to consumer expectations and create valuable customer experiences that may divert from previous interaction types but will be the catalyst for remaining relevant and staying abreast of the market's evolving trends in the New Year.
