Savasana Station - August

Long before Savasana Station open its doors,  there was Kim Stetz, yogini, meditation teacher and health coach. I've been mailing out these newsletters for four + years and I think it's time to retire Healthy Spicy Life newsletter and welcome Savasana Station newsletter. I will continue to send out emails regarding events, classes and scheduling pertaining to Savasana Station and let it grow from there. I will not take anyone off the mailing list who is on HSL mailing list, but feel free to stop receiving emails if you don't want them. That option is on the bottom of this email. I don't sell email lists nor do I litter your mailbox. I am thankful for all of your continued support.

East Meets West

Did you know
our brains are predisposed to what neuroscientists call a "negativity bias"? Our brains continually scan for bad news to protect us. It was great back in the day when we were running from dinosaurs and sabertooth tigers, but we no longer need to do that. Though it may feel like at times our daily run ins with others at work, home, or commuting, we are being attacked by said extinct animals; our brains haven't quite caught up with modern lifestyles. We react to what is perceived as a threat out of a fear embedded pattern that creates stress, anxiety, nervous twitches - the list goes on. This "cave man brain" powered reaction probably saved our lives back in the day. Think survival of the fittest. However, it's not so much like that any more.

When it comes to the "negativity bias" one way to help build the "muscle" in your brain to level the playing field so to speak is to fully allow and receive good experiences then let them sink in for 15 to 30 seconds. Dr. Rick Hanson says "neurons that fire together wire together". Allowing ourselves to take in a compliment without deflecting it right away (watch yourself the next time someone compliments your smile or a nice dress - oh, I just ate my breath smells or this old dress?? - you know what I'm saying). Take in the compliment and say thank you. This process helps us remap our negativity biased brains towards a more relaxed less anxious state. Also, you can contemplate something that you are grateful for ie: a delicious meal, a hug, a good day, kindness from a stranger, a compliment. Contemplative practices like meditation rewire our brains. If you would like to hear more about taking in the good, please watch Dr. Hanson's talk.

Maha love, Kim

 Testimonials

"I may eat more kitchari than I should to get through this first sugar-free evening. It is so good. I made it with carrots. Delicious first day! Only violent act so far has been massaging the kale :)"

"Food wise - the day was amazing. Loved nourishing my body with yummy food and loved trying to be more mindful in general. Thanks for letting me share and thank you Kim!!!"

"What a day! Kim, I so appreciated your "food for thought" email. I've done a few detox programs, but this one feels like it is going a lot deeper! I thought about ahimsa for much of the day...I actually went to an excellent seminar on masculinity/violence in our culture this morning. I think my most violent thinking took place when I was swearing at morning traffic...I was a little crabby about not having my morning coffee, but I caught myself. :)"

"Hi Kim, I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful 10 days and amazing advice/thoughts/practices/support that are going to stick with me for the rest of my life. I hope to join in the next time around too, if there is one. Much love and gratitude"
