Having Fun While Helping Others
One of the best parts about summer is slowing life down a bit and taking time for fun outdoor activities. Being able to play croquet on a Sunday afternoon with family and friends is a real treat after the long and cold winter we had.
What's even better than that is being able to participate in outdoor activities that benefit our neighbors in need. There are some amazing community events coming up, like the SLAMDiabetes Wiffle Ball Tournament, Relay for Life walks, the Prouty, the Harpoon Point to Point and the Last Mile Ride in Randolph. Depending on where you live, you may not be familiar with all of these events. Our employees across the region are making time to participate in each of these great fundraisers to help those in need. Being able to walk with cancer survivors, ride your bike to benefit our hungry neighbors or run a 5K to support end-of-life care makes getting outdoors that much more precious.
We hope you'll join us at some of the great community events going on across Northern New England this summer, many to benefit our neighbors in need. Vermont and New Hampshire have so much to offer, and we're proud to take part in these activities with our neighbors.

Emergency Awareness App
Smart Phones are Important Tools in a Disaster
Are you prepared to weather a disaster?
Although hurricane season is here, hurricanes are not the only natural disaster we face in summer months. Unusually heavy rain, severe thunderstorms, flooding, tornadoes, drought, wildfires and loss of power are just some of the events that have affected millions of people across the U.S. just this year.
Our cell phone can be an important tool to aid during a disaster. They are a key part of how emergency responders and survivors get information during disasters, and are often the primary means of communication when there is no power.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers a great mobile phone app to prepare you in the event of a disaster. It's available free in the Apple App Store and Google Play for Android devices.
The app provides preparedness information for different types of disasters, an interactive checklist for emergency kits, a section to plan emergency meeting locations, and information on how to stay safe and recover after a disaster. A new feature added this year allows you to receive weather alerts from five locations you select anywhere in the country, even if the phone is not located in the area. This tool makes it easy to follow severe weather that may be threatening your family and friends in other areas.

"When I was purchasing my home and collecting insurance rates, I initially went to my long-time representative, Flo. I had auto coverage with her for years, so I was confident she could save me money when I bundled home and auto - negative. The grand total was disappointing and triple what I was told to expect. I was directed to Morgan at Kinney Pike, who was attentive and equipped with superior customer service skills. Morgan gave me a bundled rate lower than the coverage I had for just auto all those years with Flo! I wish I went local years ago!"

Dog Bite Claims Can Be Expensive!
Dog bites and other dog-related injuries accounted for more than 1/3 of all homeowner insurance liability claim dollars paid out in 2014. The average cost paid out for dog bite claims nationally in 2014 was $32,072! The trend in higher costs per claim is attributable not only to dog bites, but also to dogs knocking down children, bicyclists, senior citizens, etc resulting in fractures and other injuries that affect the potential severity of the losses.
The Insurance Information Institute offers the following precautions to help reduce the chance of your dog biting someone:
- Learn about suitable breeds of dogs for you/your surroundings. - Spend time with a dog before buying or adopting it. Use caution when bringing a dog into a home with an infant or toddler.
- Be sensitive to cues that a child is fearful of or apprehensive about a dog. Don't leave infants or young children alone with any dog.
- Socialize dogs to know how to act with other animals and people.
- Discourage children from disturbing a dog that is eating or sleeping.
- Never approach a strange dog and always avoid eye contact with a dog that appears threatening.
- Immediately seek professional advice (e.g. veterinarians) if a dog develops aggressive or undesirable behaviors.
