Boyett Health News
Hello from Boyett Health Services! Spring is finally here! With all the cold weather we've had it's hardly felt like spring, but recent warmer temperatures have arrived just in time.
March 20th is the vernal equinox, commonly referred to as the first day of spring. While most have been longing for sunshine and warmer weather, for some spring can carry a variety of health concerns. This month we are focusing on one of the most common obstacles people face in this season, allergies. In addition, we've found some incredible tools to help you find success in living a healthy lifestyle as we celebrate National Nutrition Month here at Boyett Health!
Everywhere you look, spring is bursting forth in new life. Flowers bloom, trees bud, birds sing! All of us can feel our spirits lift with each new beautiful day. We hope your spring season brings you much more than allergies, but rather, an inner renewal and joy in your soul! Happy Spring!
Seasonal Allergies: Nip them in the bud
The first seasonal health concern that jumps to most people's minds are allergies.  If you are one of the millions who live with seasonal allergies, just imagine being on the beach as the breeze blows all the pollen away. Or perhaps you would rather picture being on a mountain peak. These are just about the only two places people with pollen allergies can live relatively symptom free.

Spring means flower buds and blooming trees and if you're one of the millions of people who have seasonal allergies, it also means sneezing, congestion, runny nose and other bothersome symptoms. Seasonal allergies can make you miserable.

"Allergies are an abnormal reaction by a person's immune system to a normally harmless substance," explains Pamela A. Georgeson, DO, an osteopathic allergist from Chesterfield Township, Mich. "People can be allergic to all types of things, including pollens from trees, grasses and weeds, mold spores, pet dander, dust mites, foods and medications."

"As the weather gets warmer and plants start to bloom, trees and grasses release pollen into the air," says Dr. Georgeson. "For people with seasonal allergies, this pollen reacts with antibodies in the body, causing histamine and other chemical substances to be released, which then cause various symptoms."

In an article written by the world famous mayo clinic, we've found some great information on how relieve seasonal allergies. It's time to not be limited because of what this new season brings. Bite into A Healthy Lifestyle: National Nutrition Month 2015
If you planned to start eating better at the start of 2015 but have gotten a bit off track, National Nutrition Month® is a good time to refocus. National Nutrition Month® is celebrated each March to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The theme for 2015 is "Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle." Here are 5 tips from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to help you do just that:
  1. Eat Breakfast-There's no better way to start your morning than with a healthy breakfast. Include lean protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy. Try our Make Ahead Breakfast Burritos to get you going in the morning!
  2. Fix Healthy Snacks- Healthy snacks help sustain your energy levels between meals and prevent overeating at mealtime. Make your snacks combination snacks by choosing from two or more of the MyPlate food groups.
  3. Get Cooking-Cooking at home is usually healthier because you get to decide how much fat, salt, and sugar to add to your foods. Check out our Spend Smart. Eat Smart. How to channel to view a variety of cooking videos.
  4. Explore New Foods and Flavors- When shopping, set a goal to select a fruit, vegetable, or whole grain that's new to you or your family. Visit www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org to learn about a variety of fruits and vegetables.
  5. Eat Meals Together- Research shows that family meals promote healthier eating. Plan to eat as a family at least a few times each week. Turn off the TV, phones or other electronic devices to encourage talking at mealtimes. Use our Mealtime Conversation Cards to get the conversation going!
