Preventing Illness
|
|
The holidays are a time for relaxation, enjoyment and celebration with family and friends. However, they are also unfortunately a common time of year for respiratory virus infections and this year, with pandemic H1N1 influenza, infections may be even more common. Here are some tips to stay healthy and prevent infection over the holiday season.
- Wash your hands frequently. Hand washing is one of the most important things you can do to avoid infections and stay healthy. Wash your hands with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds) or with alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Get vaccinated. If you have not already been vaccinated against the flu now is the time. Getting vaccinated is the single best way to prevent influenza infection. While you are at it, check to make sure you are up to date on all your immunizations.

Caring For Your Teeth This Season |
The winter holidays are known for sweet treats and tempting goodies, but that doesn't mean that you have to end up at the dentist with cavities in January. How do sweet foods and drinks cause cavities? When you eat sugary foods or drinks, naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth feed on the sugar and create acids as a by-product. These acids then wear down the tooth enamel, making it weaker and more susceptible to tooth decay as well as a host of other problems, including gingivitis. Snacking on sweets throughout the day or during an extended period of time (such as at a holiday party) is especially harmful, since damaging acids form in the mouth every time you eat a sugary snack and continue to affect the teeth for at least 20 minutes afterwards. |
