Donor Profile: Betty Newton
A 'Bientot Boutique
Clients and staff are always very grateful for the generous donations we receive throughout the year. During our 2012 Holiday Store, Betty Newton, owner of A' Bientot, donated hundreds of beautiful headbands, rich-colored scarves and shawls for our clients! Betty and her husband Stephen are co-chairs of this year's Spring Gala, along with Kathy and John Orton. Their generosity goes beyond the Holiday Store. Betty has donated many shawls, trench coats, leather jackets, nightgowns and slippers for shelter clients, non-residential clients and to the hospital accompaniment program. Betty's contributions help us keep our mission alive!
Spring Gala Honoring Andrea White
The Houston Area Women's Center Spring Gala honors Andrea White, American novelist and civic leader. In addition to writing, White serves as an active community volunteer. In partnership with the Houston Independent School District Board, White and her husband, former Houston Mayor Bill White, started Expectation Graduation, a door-to-door initiative to reach out to Houston area youth who had not returned to school. The Gala benefits the Women's Center, which operates the only rape crisis hotline and residential shelter for victims of domestic and sexual violence in Houston. The corporate honoree for the Spring Gala is Memorial Hermann. For more information, visit here.
A Toast to OKRA Charity Saloon
The Houston Area Women's Center is happy to announce we won the February vote at OKRA Charity Saloon and will be the beneficiary of its
March profits at the bar. Come on out to OKRA, have a drink and support us this month--all profits will benefit survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. Thank you OKRA, staff, friends and volunteers for all your support!

VAWA is Reauthorized!
President Barack Obama signed the Violence Against Women Act on March 7th. The new version expands protections to include Native American, LGBT and immigrant victims of abuse. VAWA will be reauthorized for another five years, with funding being provided for various programs targeting domestic violence. The Houston Area Women's Center applauds those who stood in support of survivors of violence. VAWA renews our commitment as a nation to protect survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. Thank you to everyone who supported VAWA!
