Join our One Billion Rising on V-Day

One in three women on the planet is raped or beaten in her lifetime.  On Feb. 14th, join staff, friends and supporters at the Houston Area Women's Center (1010 Waugh Dr.) from 12pm-1pm as we demand an end to sexual and domestic violence worldwide. We'll be playing "Break the Chain" and encourage everyone to walk out, dance, rise up and demand an end to domestic and sexual violence.

That is ONE BILLION WOMEN violated -- daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, lovers and friends.  The One Billion Rising campaign invites all women and those who love them to walk out, dance, rise up and demand an end to violence against women this V-day.
Please share with friends and volunteers and join us on V-Day at the Houston Area Women's Center to illustrate our love and passion for this cause. For more information visit here.
Rugby Comes to Houston

New and longtime rugby fans gathered at BBVA Compass Stadium on Feb. 1 and 2 for the International Rugby Board (IRB) Women's Sevens World Series. The two-day series featured 12 international teams competing in a sport that is growing around the world and here in Houston. The event partnered with the Houston Area Women's Center and $1 from each ticket sold benefitted the Center's clients. The partnership is a great illustration of empowering women through sports, education and community outreach. In the final game, England bested hosts USA 29-12. "The home crowd was amazing for us and they definitely inspired us as well," said USA team captain Vanesha McGee. The Houston Area Women's Center thanks all those who supported the hometown team, the event and the Center. We also want to thank the Women's Sevens team who came out to visit the children at the shelter and play rugby with them a few days before their big tournament. The kids had an amazing time and enjoyed their company!
