Allie and Kim's Story

It sounded exciting to 14 year old Allie when a group of older boys asked her and her friend, Kim, to skip school and go hang out at a new arcade that had just opened. They promised they would have the girls back to school before dismissal. Allie and Kim didn't get much attention from their peers and were flattered and excited that these guys had asked them to go along. But once in the car, the boys headed in the opposite direction of the arcade and out into a rural area. When they drove down a dirt road and stopped in front of an old shack, Allie began to get a sinking feeling in her stomach. For the next three hours, Allie and Kim were gang raped repeatedly by the four older boys. They then took the girls back to the school, as if nothing had happened, and warned them not to tell anyone...

  • In 2012, shelter facilities and non-residential centers in Texas served more than 79,000 adults and children.
  • Nearly 200,000 calls were made to hotlines, including nearly 40,000 at the Houston Area Women's Center.
  • In Texas, 102 women were killed by their intimate partner in 2011.
  • In Harris Country, 23 women were killed by their intimate partner in 2011.

Women's Rugby Empowering Women Through Sports, Education and Community Outreach


Houston is hosting the second round of the International Women's Rugby Sevens World Series February 1st and 2nd at BBVA Compass Stadium. The two-day series features 12 international teams competing in a sport that is growing around the world and here in Houston. The event has partnered with the Houston Area Women's Center and $1 from each ticket sold will benefit the Women's Center's clients. The partnership is a great illustration of empowering women through sports, education and community outreach. Join Young Leaders at Karbach BreweryYL Karbach Event 
In preparation for the Race Against Violence on March 2nd, HAWC Young Leaders have formed a team and begun their fundraising efforts to reach their goal of $20,000. Join the Young Leaders on Sunday, January 27th from 2-4 p.m. at Karbach Brewery as they continue fundraising and kick off their team's registration for the Race Against Violence. If you register as a participant on the Young Leaders team, your entry to this event is FREE! To register, click here. All proceeds from this event entry as well as Race Against Violence registration and/or fundraising will directly support the Houston Area Women's Center's clients. In addition, Bobby Heugel, owner of Anvil Bar and Refuge has joined the Young Leaders team as the top fundraiser raising more than $5,000 for the Race Against Violence. If he reaches his goal of $10,000 Heugel will open Anvil on March 3rd, the day after the race and sell $1 cocktails ALL night!
