Martin Downs Animal Hospital is a proud sponsor of this event.

HEARTWORM GUARANTEE
Dr. Poderski examining Inkie before she comes in for her heartworm treatment.
It was a day like every other. It was Inkie's time for her annual wellness exam with Dr. Waters. She received her vaccine, and the technicians took samples for a heartworm and stool check. Everything looked fine on her exam except for a little arthritis but for an older dog she was looking pretty good. She purchased her monthly single dose of Revolution and was on her way.

The next day when results came in for Inkie's heartworm test, there was something not right. The test said that she was positive for heartworms. There can sometimes be a false positive test that comes in so we ran another heartworm test, again with the same bad results.

Since Inkie's owner has been very diligent about buying Revolution every month (she buys a single dose monthly to help keep the cost down) and her medical records showed she has been on prevention monthly for several years, we placed a call to Zoetis (previously Pfizer) to inform them of the situation. Inkie received a case number and Zoetis will cover all costs for Inkie to have a Heartworm treatment, and they are also providing a year's supply of Revolution.

Inkie's owner was very relieved that Zoetis is taking responsibility and covering the treatment cost as it is very expensive, treatment can cost $800 to $1000.  This is one reason pet owners should alway buy their heartworm preventative from their veterinarians and not online. If Inkie had not had a medical history documenting the monthly purchase of Revolution, Zoetis would not have covered anything. They only guarantee their products when purchased from a licensed veterinarian.

Getting a positive result while on a monthly heartworm prevention is a rare occurrance, but it does happen. If you buy your prevention from your veterinarian, all pharmaceutical companies will back up their products. However, if you fall into the trend of purchasing your pet's medications from online pharmacies, they will not cover the product and you will be out a lot of money. Plus, animal hospitals have specials on their products that you cannot find online. You will receive free doses or get rebates for the products, and that usually matches any online price you may get. See the New Coupon section below this article.

Amber is originally from West Palm Beach, Florida. She has been working in the animal medical field for 15 years. Her career in veterinary medicine started when she volunteered to work in the kennel area of a small animal clinic. From there she continued to learn different skills and moved up to the hospital area. In her spare time, Amber enjoys spending time with her three dogs and two cats. Amber is a welcome addition to our technical staff.

ADOPTION CORNER

Domino's House - JoJo
People here at Domino's House rave over my white whiskers and chest against my black fur. They seem to think it's adorable. What do you think? I'm a 6 week old female kitten who just loves to romp, run, explore, play, and cuddle with whoever wants to join me. I'm hoping to soon find my special person or family to love forever. I'll be ready to go home with you in a couple of weeks but you can come by and visit now. Please!

Contact Domino's House if you are interested (772) 781-5592

St. Lucie Humane Society - Reggie
This little guy is at the Saint Lucie Humane Society and holds a special place in the heart of one of our employees. He was found a little over a week ago running loose on one of the busiest streets in Port St. Lucie. She stopped to check if he had a tag and he jumped right into her car. After driving around for 3 hours trying to find his home and a sleep over at her house that night, she decided the best place to bring him would be to the Humane Society where his owner may go looking for him. After waiting a week, and several posts on Craigslist trying to send some type of message to anyone that would be looking for him, no one came to claim him as theirs.  He is still currently at the Humane Society under the name of "Reggie"

"Reggie" is a purebred Boston Terrier and the Humane Society is assuming he is about 8 years old. He has plenty of spunk and is not about to slow down! HE IS A NICE BOY, PLAYFUL, ACTIVE AND LOOKING FOR A FAMILY THAT WILL KEEP HIM BUSY.

If anyone is interested please contact the St Lucie Humane Society (not the Treasure Coast Humane Society here in Palm City.)
SENIOR PET MONTHS -
SEPTEMBER THRU NOVEMBER
Your pet becomes a "Senior" at 7 years of age. Since pets age more rapidly than humans do, we need to take some special precautions with them. For the month of September thru November,  Martin Downs Animal Hospital will be offering  Senior Screening Packages for your dogs and cats, too.

The package will include labwork, urinalysis, x-rays (2 views of either the abdomen or chest), blood pressure and glaucoma screening. We will also provide you with a written report of the findings / results. Please call 288-3456 to set up a Senior screening for your furry friend today!
NUTRITION 101

HEALTHY WEIGHT FOR LIFE
Weight Management For Your Senior Pet

As pets age, they tend to be less active and their metabolism slows. As a result, their nutritional requirements may differ from when they were younger. Weight management should be part of your senior pet's healthcare. Talk with your veterinarian about the type of diet and level of exercise that is best for your dog or cat to help make their senior years healthy and happy.

Strive for a 5.

To keep your senior pet at an ideal body condition, be sure to know his or her Body Condition Score (BCS). To determine this, your veterinarian may consult the 9-Point Body Condition Score System to see if your adult dog or cat is too thin (1 to 4), at an ideal body condition (5), or too heavy (6 to 9).

Dogs: At an ideal body condition, you can feel but not see a dog's ribs and the dog has a waist when viewed from above. The abdomen is tucked up when viewed from the side.

Cats: At an ideal body condition, you can feel ribs, but not see them. The cat should have a waist when viewed from above. Belly fat should be minimal.

Nutrition options.
There are many pet foods on the market.  The diets that we are most familiar with and recommend the most are:
  • Royal Canin
  • Purina
  • Hills/Science Diet
  • Eukanuba/Iams

Consult your veterinarian if your pet's weight or body condition changes noticeably. Taking action early can help address issues before they become problems.

CASE OF THE MONTH
Cold Laser Therapy is a laser light that penetrates deep into the skin / tissue layers to stimulate cellular energy and metabolic processes which promote healing and tissue regeneration. It also stimulates the release of natural pain killing chemicals within the body which facilitate long lasting pain relief.  There are numerous indications for cold laser therapy. They include: arthritis, bite wounds, joint pain, post surgical wound healing, soft tissue injuries, burns, edema, fractures, intervertebral disc disease, hot spots, lick granulomas, ear infections, stomatitis and much more.

We recently did a case study on a Labrador Retriever with several granulomas and had great results. She had laser treatment on her wounds twice a week for 5 weeks and they are completely gone, as you can see in the pictures below. If you have a pet with any of these symptoms, or want to know if your pet is a candidate for this procedure, call Martin Downs Animal Hospital 772-288-3456.

HURRICANE AWARENESS
June 1st marked the beginning of the dreaded Hurricane Season. Even if we don't like it, it is inevitable. We just need to make sure we are prepared and that we remember our pets when we do our preparations. Always remember, Martin Downs Animal Hospital is a Pet Hurricane Shelter.  All you need to do are follow these few simple rules:

Please stop by and pick up one of our brochures if you think you will be needing to use our facility in the time of a hurricane. You will just need to provide a few simple things:
  • Place a $50 non-refundable deposit to reserve a space for your pet as soon as the National Weather Service posts a Hurricane Watch. Pre-pay for 3 nights of boarding when you arrive in case we have no electricity at the end of the storm.
  • Submit a one-time fee of $25 per pet for 24 hour care and any tranquilizations that may be needed.
  • Leave your pet's supplies, but they must fit into a milk crate-sized container.
  • Bring with you one gallon of water, clay litter (for cats) or wee wee pads (for dogs), a roll of paper towels, and enough food for 5 days labeled in baggies with the pet's name (if you do not bring food then kennel food will be provided for your pet).
  • Please avoid bringing bedding and stuffed toys as we won't have any way to wash them if they become soiled.
  • When the hurricane passes, call MDAH's voice mail for instructions on picking up your pet. If phone services are unavailable, then drive by the hospital and look for signs posted on the door.

Go to our website to read our brochure online or stop by our hospital to pick one up!
