FREE FOOD  OFFER
WE NEED YOUR PETS!!!

The Iams company is on the search for overweight dogs. If you have a pet that is heavier than they should be and you would like to help them shed the extra pounds, there might be a solution. Our Iams representative has offered to sponsor 4 pets and give them 3 bags of Iams Weight diet for FREE!

First, pets must be healthy and not have a pre-existing condition that could predispose them to being overweight (for example: a pet with thyroidal illness or a pet currently on steroids). Owners have to commit to at least 3 months of feeding the diet exclusively and coming in every 3-4 weeks for weigh-ins. We need to work closely with you, the owners, to track your pets progress and see how your pet is doing on the diet. If you would like to know if your pet may qualify for this program, please call us at 772-288-3456 and speak with Sherri. We only have 3 spaces left!!!
NUTRITION 101

HEALTHY WEIGHT FOR LIFE
Feeding Your Puppy

Your puppy is active and full of life. Help keep him happy and healthy by feeding wisely from day one. Your veterinary team will help you determine the best diet and portion size to help promote your puppy's growth and a healthy weight for life.

Develop healthy habits early.
Puppies require a special diet formulated for their growth and development. It's also important to follow the feeding instructions on their food packaging and adjust as necessary to keep them at an ideal body condition. At approximately 1 year of age, small and medium breed dogs should eating an adult diet; at approximately 18 months, large breed dogs should be transitioned to adult diets. Check with your veterinarian for the appropriate time to transition your diet.

Nutrition options for puppies.
There are many pet foods on the market, the diets that we are most familiar with and recommend the most are:
  • Royal Canin
  • Purina
  • Hills / Science Diet
  • Eukanuba / Iams

Strive for a 5.

To keep your puppy at an ideal body condition as he grows and when he reaches adulthood, be sure to know his Body Condition Score (BCS). To determine this, your veterinarian may consult the 9-Point Body Condition System to see if your dog is at an ideal body condition (5) or too heavy (6 to 9).

If your adult dog is at an ideal body condition:

  • You can feel but not see his ribs.
  • His waist is visible when viewed from above.
  • His abdomen is tucked up when viewed from the side.

Consult your veterinarian if your dog's weight or body condition changes noticeably. Taking action early can help address issues before they become problems.

During obedience training, you can use a kibble of puppy food to reward your pet.

HURRICANE AWARENESS
June 1st marks the beginning of the dreaded Hurricane Season. Even if we don't like it, it is inevitable. We just need to make sure we are prepared and that we remember our pets when we do our preparations. Always remember, Martin Downs Animal Hospital is a Pet Hurricane Shelter.  All you need to do are follow these few simple rules:

Please stop by and pick up one of our brochures if you think you will be needing to use our facility in the time of a hurricane. You will just need to provide a few simple things:
  • Place a $50 non-refundable deposit to reserve a space for your pet as soon as the National Weather Service posts a Hurricane Watch. Pre-pay for 3 nights of boarding when you arrive in case we have no electricity at the end of the storm.
  • Submit a one-time fee of $25 per pet for 24 hour care and any tranquilizations that may be needed.
  • Leave your pet's supplies, but they must fit into a milk crate-sized container.
  • Bring with you one gallon of water, clay litter (for cats) or wee wee pads (for dogs), a roll of paper towels, and enough food for 5 days labeled in baggies with the pet's name (if you do not bring food then kennel food will be provided for your pet).
  • Please avoid bringing bedding and stuffed toys as we won't have any way to wash them if they become soiled.
  • When the hurricane passes, call MDAH's voice mail for instructions on picking up your pet. If phone services are unavailable, then drive by the hospital and look for signs posted on the door.

Go to our website to read our brochure online or stop by our hospital to pick one up!
