Domino's House - Smudge Hi folks, my name is Smudge. I guess because my nose looks like someone with a dirty finger stroked my nose. In a week or so I'll be old enough to be adopted and go to my "forever" home. I'm really looking forward to that. Then I can play and romp and explore and snuggle and just love and be loved. Boy, doesn't that sound wonderful? Well, what are you waiting for?

FREE FOOD OFFER
WE NEED YOUR PETS!!!
The Iams company is on the search for overweight dogs. If you have a pet that is heavier than they should be and you would like to help them shed the extra pounds, there might be a solution. Our Iams representative has offered to sponsor 4 pets and give them 3 bags of Iams Weight diet for FREE!
First, pets must be healthy and not have a pre-existing condition that could predispose them to being overweight (for example: a pet with thyroidal illness or a pet currently on steroids). Owners have to commit to at least 3 months of feeding the diet exclusively and coming in every 3-4 weeks for weigh-ins. We need to work closely with you, the owners, to track your pets progress and see how your pet is doing on the diet. If you would like to know if your pet may qualify for this program, please call us at 772-288-3456 and speak with Sherri. We only have 3 spaces left!!!

NUTRITION 101

MYTH OR FACT?
When it comes to pet food, "natural," "organic," and "holistic" are the same.
IT'S A MYTH
In grocery stores and pet stores, the terms "natural," "organic," and "holistic" are frequently and freely used on packages to imply that foods with these labels are healthier than those without. THE FACTS "Natural" and "organic" do not mean the same thing:
NATURAL - The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) defines and regulates the term "natural" for pet food and animal feed.
- The term "natural" means a feed or ingredient derived solely from plant, animal, or mined sources that have not been produced by a chemically synthetic process.
- In addition, natural feed and ingredients do not contain any additives or processing aids that are chemically synthetic.
- However, chemically synthesized vitamins, minerals and other trace nutrients are acceptable.
ORGANIC - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program defines and regulates the term "organic" for pet food and human food. "Organic" refers to the way a crop or animal is grown or raised and handled.
- Organic crops must be grown on land free from pesticides for three years.
- Organic livestock is fed organic feed, is not given antibiotics or hormones, and has access to the outdoors.
Natural and organic foods are not necessarily healthier than conventional foods: - The USDA makes no claims that organically produced food is safer or more nutritious than conventionally produced food.
- Organic food differs from conventionally produced food in the way it is grown, handled and processed.
Not all foods labeled organic contain only organic ingredients: - There are four levels of organic food
- 100% organic
- Organic (95%)
- Made with organic (70% to 95%)
- Less than 70% organic
- Look for the USDA organic seal as proof of a certified organic pet food. Pet foods with that seal must contain 95% to 100% organic ingredients.
"Holistic" is a vague term that can have many meanings: - "Holistic" as it refers to pet food is not defined or regulated by any regulatory body.
REMEMBER Although pet foods labeled as natural, organic and/or holistic are increasingly popular, the use of these terms can be misleading or confusing when trying to choose the best food for your pet. These terms do not guarantee better nutrition for your pet.

June 1st marks the beginning of the dreaded Hurricane Season. Even if we don't like it, it is inevitable. We just need to make sure we are prepared and that we remember our pets when we do our preparations. Always remember, Martin Downs Animal Hospital is a Pet Hurricane Shelter. All you need to do are follow these few simple rules:
Please stop by and pick up one of our brochures if you think you will be needing to use our facility in the time of a hurricane. You will just need to provide a few simple things:
- Place a $50 non-refundable deposit to reserve a space for your pet as soon as the National Weather Service posts a Hurricane Watch. Pre-pay for 3 nights of boarding when you arrive in case we have no electricity at the end of the storm.
- Submit a one-time fee of $25 per pet for 24 hour care and any tranquilizations that may be needed.
- Leave your pet's supplies, but they must fit into a milk crate-sized container.
- Bring with you one gallon of water, clay litter (for cats) or wee wee pads (for dogs), a roll of paper towels, and enough food for 5 days labeled in baggies with the pet's name (if you do not bring food then kennel food will be provided for your pet).
- Please avoid bringing bedding and stuffed toys as we won't have any way to wash them if they become soiled.
- When the hurricane passes, call MDAH's voice mail for instructions on picking up your pet. If phone services are unavailable, then drive by the hospital and look for signs posted on the door.
Go to our website to read our brochure online or stop by our hospital to pick one up!

HEARTWORMS
Summer is approaching which mean those pesky mosquitoes will be around as well. With mosquitos comes the risk of heartworm disease. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes and can be fatal or very costly if your pet becomes infected by the parasite. In our hospital we have had more cases of positive heartworm disease then every before. Please, for the sake of your pet, make sure yours stays on heartworm prevention year round. A monthly, oral, Heartgard Plus dose can cost as little as $6 - $10 a month while treatment if your pet becomes infected starts at $600, not to mention the toxic medication that is used to kill the heartworms. If you don't like to give your pet an oral mediation, there is always the option of topical products. If you are the type that easily forgets to give the monthly dose, there is a 6 month injection that is available. We can always find a solution to help you keep your pet safe, just call us and we can go over the options.
