A NOTE FROM THE DOCTORS
Dr. Waters and Poderski's son Aleksander "Bucky" has completed his Eagle Scout Project. The enclosure at Domino's House called "Bella's House" was completed March 17th. Bella's House will be housing all of the FELV / FIV positive cats that reside at the no-kill shelter. Bucky and Domino's House thank you for all of your support. This project could not have been completed without our generous client's help.

Iams Weight Diet
The Iams company is on the search for overweight dogs. If you have a pet that is heavier than they should be and you would like to help them shed the extra pounds, there might be a solution. Our Iams representative has offered to sponsor 4 pets and give them 3 bags of Iams Weight diet for FREE!
First, pets must be healthy and not have a preexisting condition that could predispose them to being overweight (for example: a pet with thyroidal illness or a pet currently on steroids). Owners have to commit to at least 3 months of feeding the diet exclusively and coming in every 3-4 weeks for weigh-ins. We need to work closely with you, the owners, to track your pets progress and see how your pet is doing on the diet. If you would like to know if your pet may qualify for this program please call us at 772-288-3456 and speak with Sherri.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Ashley graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture Education. Shortly after she graduated, she decided there was something more for her and thought it would be best if she went back to finish up some requirements to get into vet school. She has a strong background in agriculture and the livestock industry. Her interest in animals spurred from her mother and father who raised her on a farm and taught her most of what she knows. She showed cattle and swine through 4-H and FFA for 11 years and loved every minute of it. She is very adventurous and has many things she would like to accomplish in life. She absolutely loves the sun and the water and, being on the bow of a boat is her favorite place to be. She has an older sister, who blessed her with a wonderful nephew, and a younger brother. She loves her family and has a wonderful fiancé. She is very excited to be starting a new chapter in her life and finding out where it takes her.

BOARDER OF THE MONTH
Leda is a spry 15 year old mixed breed who was visiting our pet resort, but she wasn't just any old resort guest, she was a special one. Leda was diagnosed with cancer last year and is taking Chemotherapy medications. Because of this we had Leda staying on the medical side, where she would be constantly monitored by the doctors and technicians on staff. But that doesn't mean she sat in a cage all day... Dr. Giovando enjoyed taking her out to run and romp in the back yard and she got to go and play with the doggie day care guests on the resort side of the hospital. She thoroughly enjoyed her stay here at Martin Downs Animal Hospital.

GROOM OF MONTH
This is Rascal. Unfortunately, Rascal is currently residing at the Treasure Coast Humane Society. He is a 12 year old Shih Tzu and is looking for a home. Rascal is very personable and loves to be held. He will be current on his vaccines, neutered and microchipped through the Humane Society. Elke, one of our professional groomers, gave him a new hair cut to hopefully make him more appealing to the eyes as he waits desperately to be adopted. If you are interested in adopting Rascal, please stop by the Humane Society and check him out. News Article From The Ledger (Polk County Newspaper)
DON'T RUSH YOUR GROOMER
Three or four hours to groom my dog?? Absolutely! There seems to be a large portion of the general public who believes grooming a dog is just popping the dog in the bath and running a clipper over them and that's the grooming procedure. Or like magic - "poof" - it will be done. Rushing the groomer is like rushing an artist. Please click here to read the rest of the article... All About Pets: Don't Rush Your Groomer

ADOPTION CORNER
Domino's House - Rosey Posey
Greetings, I'm Rosey Posey, a 4 year old female Himalayan cat. My "owner" brought me here because she had no time for me; what an idiot. I'm a sweet, loving and obviously beautiful. I'm not a high maintenance cat because I just love to be brushed. Come near me with a brush and I immediately start purring. All I want is a real "forever" home and someone to love forever. Can you help? Contact us at dominoshouse.org or call us at 772-781-5592
Humane Society of the Treasure Coast Attention all Seniors (Age: 60+) if you are looking for a furry friend, you can adopt a Senior pet (Age: 7+) for FREE!!! If you are interested please stop by the Humane Society for more information.
Also, there are Chihuahuas galore at the Humane Society. They rescued 30 Chihuahuas aged 1-14 years. They are able to be adopted for a special price of $20. They will need to have dentals done and are best not around children, but will be spayed / neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Humane Society - Singapore Singapore is a 2 year old Siamese Mix. She was raised in a foster home and adopted but was returned to the foster parents 2 years later. Singapore gets along with other cats and lived with 3 dogs. She will be spayed, microchipped and current on vaccines.
If you are interested in adopting Singapore, please contact the Humane Society.

NUTRITION 101

MYTH OR FACT?
Pet Foods Should Be Grain Free
IT'S A MYTH
Many pet owners believe that grain-free pet foods are easier to digest and provide pets with better nutrition than pet foods containing grain. THE FACTS The carbohydrates, proteins and other nutrients provided by grains add to both the nutritional value and structure of pet foods. Grains supply energy:- Most cells in the body use carbohydrates as a primary source of energy.
- The nervous system (i.e., brain and nerves) requires the carbohydrate glucose to support normal functions.
Grains spare protein: - If carbohydrates, such as those from grains, aren't available, dietary protein is diverted away from its most important function -- protein synthesis -- to make glucose.
- If carbohydrates are available, dietary protein is used to build and maintain muscle and tissue.
- Reproducing females, growing puppies and kittens, and active dogs especially benefit from diets containing carbohydrates.
Grains provide fiber and other nutrients: - Grains provide fiber, which contributes to gastrointestinal health.
- Grains also contain essential fatty acids and other nutrients that contribute to a healthy skin and coat.
REMEMBER Properly processed grains provide needed nutrients as part of a nutritionally complete and balanced diet.

COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q: What do I need to do when I think my pet has a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)? A: First and foremost, DO NOT WALK YOUR PET IN THE PARKING LOT! If you suspect your pet may have a UTI, we need a sample of the urine to test. So when you get here, just come on inside and if you think your pet has to go, let us know and we will walk them and collect the sample. If you can, you may also bring us in a sample of urine. Q: Why do I need to bring in a stool sample? A: Each year your pet will have to have his or her stool examined for internal parasites. These cannot be seen by the naked eye and it takes a microscope to look for their eggs. If you bring in the sample, it would eliminate your pet from having to go through the uncomfortable procedure of collecting. It does not hurt your pet, but it doesn't feel good. If you have a puppy coming in every few weeks for vaccines, please bring a sample every time you come in. If you can't get the sample in to our hospital right away, please put it in the refrigerator until you can deliver it. Q: Why do I need to do Senior Blood Work? A: When we do blood work on a senior pet, we are looking for conditions that your pet may be hiding or for anything that has changed recently. If your pet has an underlying problem, we can develop a treatment plan that may include changing the diet and/or prescribing certain medications. If we can prevent or slow the progression of a disease, our senior pets are much more comfortable and can enjoy their remaining time with their families that much easier.

MEGA-MOSQUITO WARNING
Mega-mosquitoes, which are the size of quarters, are expected to take over areas of Florida 'in large numbers' this summer, scientists have warned. The mosquito is called the "Gallinipper" and it's 20 times the size of a normal mosquito. Despite it's size, however, it's not one of the species able to transmit West Nile or any of the mosquito born diseases. The bite is much worse than a regular mosquito and they can even bite through your shirt. There is an upside to the mosquito in that it will eat the larvae of smaller, regular mosquitoes. In an urban area, it's not really their habitat, so we probably won't see them in the city, so to speak, but if you live near a pasture-type area, or a grassy area that floods, then that's where you would see these mosquitoes the most.
