A NOTE FROM THE DOCTORS
Dr. Waters and Poderski attended the Martin County Fair Swine Auction this year. They sponsored 2 of Martin County's Youth by bidding on and buying 2 pigs. Youths raise animals under the 4-H or FFA organization to gain skills in the livestock industry. They raise the animals, show them at the fair, and then sell them. Most of the students use the money for college. The doctors at Martin Downs Animal Hospital were very happy to support these young people in their endeavors.

On another note, Aleksander (Bucky), Dr. Waters and Poderski's son, will be completing his Eagle Scout Project at Domino's House on March 16-17. The enclosure will be for "Bella's House" where they will be housing all of the FELV / FIV positive cats. This will be a comfortable space for the infected cats to live out their lives. Bucky could not have completed this project without our clients support. Thank you!!! Pictures will follow...

As a matter of fact, I consider being friends with all an important part of my job of being a great house cat. Just give me a chance and I'll show you what a love and asset to your life I can be. Urban Tails - BJ
BJ is a Maltese Mix who has had a very hard life. He was surrendered by his family because he was bitten by a dog and they did not want to pay the vet bills. We took him and fixed him up, as far as his bite, but he still has some rehab to go. His hind fur is starting to come back and he is shedding some of his excess weight. He is 20lbs and should be around 16lbs. He is very sweet, gets along with other dogs, neutered and up to date on shots. He is estimated to be around 4 years old.

MYTH OR FACT?
Gluten-Free Diets Are Healthier.

IT'S A MYTH

Although only 1% to 2% of people have celiac disease and require a gluten-free diet, many more people are jumping on the gluten-free bandwagon in hopes it will help them lose weight or feel better. And many of them assume that a gluten-free diet is what's best for their pets, too.

THE FACTS
Gastrointestinal problems associated with gluten are rare in dogs:
  • Gluten-induced enteropathy (celiac disease) is very rare in dogs and has been  reported primarily in Irish Setters.
  • Pets with celiac disease react to the proteins (gluten) in wheat, rye and barley.
  • The protein in corn gluten does not cause GI problems, even in individuals with celiac disease.

Gluten is an excellent source of high-quality protein:

  • Gluten is the concentrated protein from grain after all the starch has been removed.
  • Corn gluten meal contains approximately 60% to 70% protein.
  • It provides essential amino acids that form the building blocks for protein.
  • Gluten is highly digestible.

Protein Concentrations in Common Pet Food Ingredients (as fed):

Gluten provides structure to pet food:

  • Just as wheat gluten is added to breads to enhance the texture, a small amount in pet food helps canned formulas, kibbles and treats hold their shape.

REMEMBER

Gluten from various grains is a nutritious ingredient that provides a concentrated source of protein in pet foods. GI problems associated with wheat gluten are rare in dogs and cats, and corn gluten does not cause problems, even in pets with celiac disease.

COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: Why do I need to run yearly labwork if my pet is on a Thyroid supplement?

A: Labwork is necessary to monitor the level of medication in your pet's body. Drug levels need to be monitored on a regular basis to make sure that the medication is at effective and therapeutic levels, while at the same time safeguarding them as much as possible from the risk of any potential side effects.

Q: Why do I need yearly labwork when my pets are on NSAIDS?

A: Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) are processed through the liver.  Before starting an NSAID program, your veterinarian will require your pet to have blood work to ensure that their liver and kidneys are functioning correctly as most NSAIDS are metabolized through these organs. With long-term NSAID use, regular blood work will be required. It is important to select these medications with care since some pets are more sensitive than others to the potential side effects of analgesics.

Q: Why do I need to run labwork before an anesthetic procedure?
A: Just as your doctor requires pre-testing before any anesthesia or surgical procedure, so does your veterinarian. Your pet can't talk and often shows no signs when something is wrong. So how do you know? Pre-operative testing is the best way to ensure your pet is healthy enough for the proposed surgical procedure. With today's medical testing and technology, you can feel confident and have the peace-of-mind that your pet is healthy enough for surgical procedures.
