The Lovers, the Arts and Opening the Gates

Our artist-in-residence Lauren Raine recently sent us her seasonal graphic interpretation (below) for Beltane, the tarot Lovers.  Some may wonder why CHS would host an AIR and what connection such work has to the business of a religious education community.  But Pagans have a particular interest in and appreciation for the numinous, wending ways of the soul, and the mysteries of life found in artistic expression.  One of our core required courses, Soul Work, even puts the arts front and center for an entire semester, because we know that in their multi-layered depths you can first lose yourself, and next find out who you are and what you must do in your world.

Not unlike the arts, sharing our wealth by giving to Cherry Hill Seminary and other charitable causes can open the gates of our hearts in ways we might not expect.  That's because philanthropy is not about money, it's about the things that move us.  We find ourselves stirred to action, and one of the most effective means of action in our society is to support a worthy cause with our dollars.

Hypatia of Alexandria challenged everyone around her to rise above the mundane with commitment to excellence.  We celebrate Hypatia during the spring Annual Appeal because she inspires us to achieve our ideals.  The idea of a Pagan center of higher learning and continuing lifetime education may still be new for many, but the egregore of CHS is ever-growing, ever vital, like the fire held between The Lovers.  If you have not yet experienced the fiery satisfaction of opening your purse and your heart, or if you have not yet gotten around to making your usual gift to CHS, this is definitely the season.
