From The Executive Director
Holli Emore
Executive Director

The Pagan news has been buzzing this week with word of the arrest of someone prominent on the festival scene for many years, for the particularly malodorous charge of child porn. Blogs are veritably lit up with discussions about how questionable behavior in the past was missed or dismissed and, more importantly, what's to be done in the future.

We are sensitive to our vulnerability as a misunderstood and often-maligned minority religion.  So few of us make mainstream headlines that we blanch when it happens because of an FBI sting.  Of course, we know that abuse and other crimes happen in the Pagan community with about the same frequency as in any other religious community.

But we seem woefully unprepared for addressing the unsavory in our midst.  A lot of folks are scurrying to disassociate themselves from this latest scandal, but are we implementing measures that will ensure the healthiest possible Pagan community for the future?

Cherry Hill Seminary began offering courses on ethics and boundaries many years ago, thanks to the wisdom of then-faculty Cat Chapin-Bishop.  But all of our courses take place within an ethos of responsibility to others and ourselves, each semester deepening our students' understanding of how to live in community - whether you consider yourself solitary or belong to an organized group.

Each spring we hold our primary fund drive around Hypatia Day to raise the funds which allow us to be a beacon of support and learning for Pagans and like-minded seekers around the world.  In order to be accessible to as many as possible, our tuition is among the lowest anywhere for the kind of education we offer. Through their course projects and learning our students are making their local and regional Pagan communities stronger and healthier.  You may not have the time or need for CHS classes, but you can be part of building a stronger, safer, more satisfying world by contributing your support.

Even though solitary practice is trending upwards for Pagans, an incident like this week's arrest reminds us that we remain interconnected, sometimes even when we wish we were not.  It behooves us to be intentional, then, about what we are building.  Supporting CHS is one way you can make a tangible difference.

In Memoriam

The CHS community shares its condolences with the family and friends of Pagan scholar Donald Michael Kraig, who passed away on March 17 from pancreatic cancer.

The author of Modern Magick, Donald Michael Kraig was a writer and magician who influenced the magical practices of many modern Pagans. In lieu of flowers or cards, donations to a fund to offset medical and funeral expenses can be shared here.

The Equinox and Persephone

by Artist-in-Residence Lauren Raine

The Big Thaw starts with a trickle
water running through silence

as innocuous as breath, a slight relaxation
at corners of the mouth.

Just when winter has become a habit,
an old coat the sun peels off with a touch.
Your foot leaves a signature in new mud,
shiny as a new skin or fresh, primed canvas.

You notice a blade of grass:
green, defiantly green.
Inhale, you take your coat off
a crocus opens
in the blue iris
of someone's glance.  -Lauren Raine

CHS Bookstore Spotlight

This month, we are highlighting the works of Judy Harrow, CHS faculty member and Chair Emerita of the CHS Department of Pagan Pastoral Counseling, who passed away on March 20. As CHS Executive Director Holli Emore noted in a tribute on the CHS website, "Judy was a gifted teacher, as both our students and scores of her own lineage will attest." Below are just a few of Judy's contributions to modern Pagan scholarship and practice that are available now in the CHS Bookstore.

Spiritual Mentoring: A Pagan Guide

In this work, Judy Harrow shows the Pagan community how to use spiritual mentoring to assist others in deepening and sustaining their contact with the holy.

Devoted to You: Honoring Deity in Wiccan Practice

From the back cover: "Judy Harrow and three other modern Pagan elders tell of their religious observances and show how fostering deep connections can work in your life, too."

Wicca Covens: How to Start and Organize Your Own

A Wiccan high priestess with a master's degree in counseling offers real-life case studies and examples of what has worked--and what hasn't--in forming a coven.

Entering the Sacred Grove is an extraordinary opportunity to explore the creative spirit, myth, and an authentic spiritual life, with an extraordinarily-gifted teacher, Bob Patrick.

This year's summer intensive will be held July 10-13 in Butler, Missouri. Registration fees are $195 before April 10, $230 before May 10, and $265 before June 10. You can save your space and lock in your rate with a non-refundable $100 deposit. At long last, CHS can accept credit cards on our own, without using a third party like Paypal!

That means that we can offer installment payment plans for tuition, and automatic recurring contributions. Here's the scoop:

  • For a master's course: payment 1 $150, then monthly payments of $99 each for three months.
  • For a certificate course:  payment 1 is $99, then monthly payments of $49 each for three months.
  • For an Insights course: payment 1 is $49, then the balance of $49 is due the second week of class.

To pay with installments, you'll need to call the CHS office at 1-888-503-4131 to give us your credit card information by phone. Or you can still save just a few dollars and pay the entire amount up front either by phone or online. Once you give us your information and we enter it into our system, we will no longer be able to see the number.

Our new processor,  Chargeitpro/Payment Processing Partners, Inc., has over 40 years of experience and complies with industry standards for safe financial transactions.

We are quite excited about this step forward in building a strong infrastructure for sustainability and hope you will take advantage of the service.
