From The Director

One group of volunteers which serves Cherry Hill Seminary is our mostly behind-the-scenes and often-unsung Board of Directors.  This is our governing body, the people tasked with making sure we stick to our mission, have adequate resources to operate, keeping an eye on how I do my job, and answering to outside authorities like the State of South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and the S.C. Secretary of State.

Most board members serve a three-year term, and some of them stay for a second term.  While people normally feel they are only getting well-adjusted by the end of their first year, it's still a long time to devote to any one cause in our modern world of rapid change.

This spring two wonderful individuals have completed their terms and "rolled off" the board.  We send them on their way with deep gratitude.

When Ellen Friedman of Austin, Texas, first arrived on the Board of Directors, she identified a need - a model community event to raise awareness and funds for CHS.  With a flair for the creative, Ellen created the idea for A Sacred Feast, then approached numerous groups in the Austin Pagan community, engaging them in a chili cookoff contest and silent auction to benefit CHS.

Beth Owl's Daughter Livingston of Durham, NC, is known to many for her tarot reading and writing.  During her time on the CHS board, Beth has tirelessly promoted Cherry Hill Seminary, raising awareness through her own newsletter, personal contacts, and sponsorship at her local Pagan festival.

Both Ellen and Beth have offered personal support and wisdom, and in the process grown immeasurably in our esteem.  I have come to rely on each of them for advice, ideas and encouragement.  With love and sincere thanks, we acknowledge the fine work you have done for all of us at Cherry Hill Seminary, and wish you well in your future endeavors!  -- Holli Emore

Board of Advisors Welcomes New Member Hutton

Cherry Hill Seminary is honored to announce that Professor Ronald Hutton has joined our Board of Advisors,  a select group of individuals who have agreed to advance our mission by serving as ambassadors for CHS, advising us on occasion about strategic direction or in the area of their expertise, and open doors of opportunity for CHS.  We are grateful to Professor Hutton and to the other members of our Board of Advisors for their meaningful support. Read the recent CHS interview with Professor Hutton here.
Bob Patrick Is Teacher of the Year

CHS's Bob Patrick, Chair of the Department of Ministry, Advocacy & Leadership, holds a Ph.D. in Latin and Roman studies and teaches Latin at Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia.  During the recent annual conference of the Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT), Bob was named the 2013 SCOLT Regional Teacher of the Year.  He was selected from 13 states, and will now advance to the national competition sponsored by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). During the ACTFL Convention in Orlando, Florida, in November, he and four other regional teachers will vie for the title of ACTFL National Language Teacher of the Year. The teacher selected in November will serve as the national spokesperson for world language learning in 2014. Congratulations, Bob!

While they last, new members of The Hypatia Society who join at the Teacher level or above will receive a free canvas bag from our Sacred Lands and Spiritual Landscapes 2013 symposium.  The 14 x 14 inch cotton bags sport the graphic below as well as both the CHS and the USC school logos.

Of course, all members receive the benefits noted here. If your group, circle, coven or grove is not yet a member, you may want to look at how THS membership can help your members take CHS classes.
