June 2015 News & Events
Hospicare Offers Bereavement Events and Workshops for the Community

A man stands in the ocean and looks out.

You may know that Hospicare gives bereavement support to the families of our hospice patients for up to 13 months after the death of their loved one, but did you know we also offer bereavement support groups, workshops and events for the community? For a list of all upcoming bereavement offerings that are open to community members, visit the events page of our website and download the monthly calendar.

Here are some events happening in the month of June.

Illuminations
On Thursday evening, June 4, we will be holding Illuminations, our annual memorial event, in the Hospicare gardens. The pathways around our building will glow with luminarias, each dedicated to the memory of someone who has died.

Visit the Illuminations website to learn more or to purchase a luminaria in memory of a loved one.

How Men Grieve
Men and women often grieve in ways that may seem quite different from each other. Modern bereavement support recognizes this. To give men a space and a time to recognize their own grieving process, Hospicare is offering a one-evening grief support group for men only.

This is an opportunity to connect with other men who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Local Therapist and Hospicare volunteer Craig Kukuk, LCSW, will facilitate an informed discussion that will provide understanding and insight on how men grieve.

This support group will be held Thursday, June 11, 6:00-8:00 PM, at the Nina K. Miller Hospicare Center in Ithaca. Free and open to all men, but please register by June 9 with Donna George, LMSW, FT, (dgeorge@hospicare.org) or call 272-0212.

On-going Monthly Support Groups
We offer on-going monthly support groups for all adults who are grieving. There are two groups held at our Cortland office and one at the Nina K. Miller Hospicare Center in Ithaca. The groups are lead by Hospicare grief counselors, and all adults are welcomed to attend. In addition, we offer a special monthly group for parents grieving the loss of their children.

For group dates and times, check the Save the Dates section at the end of this e-newsletter.

Local Foundations Support Hospicare's Important Work

The back of the Hospicare Residence

Would you like to give to Hospicare through the Community Foundation of Tompkins County? Well, now you can! The Hospicare Foundation board recently created the "Hospicare Fund," a permanently endowed designated fund managed by the Community Foundation of Tompkins County. No matter where you live in New York State or beyond, you can contribute outright to the fund or designate estate gifts be added to it. The funds will help support Hospicare's mission in perpetuity. Contact the Community Foundation of Tompkins County for more information.

We are also pleased to report that Hospicare will receive $5,000 in grants at the Community Foundation of Tompkins County's awards reception on June 8. A grant of $2,000 will be awarded to us from the Kathy Yoselson Fierce Determination Fund of the Community Foundation, as well as a grant of $3,000 from Stephen & Linda Pope and (separately) the Community Foundation of Tompkins County.  The grants will support care in the Nina K. Miller Hospicare Residence for patients from Tompkins and Cortland Counties with low incomes and no insurance who cannot afford to pay for our services.

Hospice Gives Caregivers Respite
"I'm working harder than I've ever worked in my life"

a still image from the video

Pam and Steve married in 2007. Steve was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, right before their second anniversary. Pam has dedicated herself to being his caregiver, but the responsibility can be exhausting. When Steve went on hospice service in the couple's home town of Philadelphia, Pam realized that hospice was there for her too, helping her cope with Steve's demanding needs and offering her respite when she needs it most.

Women Swimmin' Laps for Hospicare Registration Still Open

Women Swimmin' Laps for Hospicare is still open for registration. This is a new opportunity for women who can not or do not want to swim across Cayuga Lake. Those who sign up for Women Swimmin' Laps can swim any distance they choose, in any pool with a certified lifeguard, between May 5 and August 8 to fundraise for Hospicare. It's a Women Swimmin' event, so fundraising totals will be included in the Women Swimmin' fundraising amount.

Watch the video to learn why some women are choosing to participate in Women Swimmin' Laps.

PBS Frontline: Being Mortal
Hospicare Teams with YMCA to Show Movie and Facilitate Discussion
On Tuesday evening, June 16, the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County will show the movie Being Mortal. This PBS Frontline documentary focuses on Dr. Atul Gawande, whose best-selling book of the same name explores our reluctance to discuss end-of-life care and our need to understand the issues surrounding death. Staff and volunteers from Hospicare will guide a discussion on the issues raised in the film after the showing.

The event is free and open to the public. Call the YMCA at 607-257-0101 to reserve a seat. For more information on the event, see this newsletter's Save the Dates section below.
