receptionist at the Cortland office.

We are pleased to announce that, on September 12, Hospicare officially became the hospice service provider for Cortland County. Joining together with the Hospice Foundation of Cortland County, which exists solely to support hospice services in that county, Hospicare embarked on a new chapter in its mission to bring high-quality hospice and palliative care to community members dealing with life-limiting illness.

As part of Hospicare's service, supplemental therapies such as therapeutic music, acupuncture and massage therapy will be offered for the first time to Cortland residents.

In our society, we are often removed from death and prefer to keep it out of sight and out of mind. But when we live with the knowledge that death is real and has little respect for age, socioeconomic conditions, nationality, race, sexual orientation or even the care we take of ourselves (though that does help stave it off), we can be more present-more present with our family and friends, more present to the beauty that surrounds us in our beloved Finger Lakes, and more present to enjoying life

As a member of the Spiritual Care Team, I offer support as people struggle with the meaning of their life and the possibility that death does not have the final word.

"Am I Dying?"
An Honest Answer Brings Peace

Matthew O'Reilly:
At a recent TED Conference, EMS Tech Matthew O'Reilly talks about his experiences with dying patients.

This short TED talk explores the reactions of injured and ill people when they are told honestly that they are dying. EMS Tech Matthew O'Reilly used to lie when patients asked "Am I dying?", and then one day he found himself affirming what the patient suspected. "I told him, yes, he was dying. There was nothing I could do," O'Reilly says. The man's reaction surprised him and changed how O'Reilly views the moment of death.
