National Hospice
And Palliative Care Month

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. This year's theme, Hope, Dignity, Love . . . It must be hospice, reminds us here at Hospicare just how much impact the care we provide has on our patients and their families.

We are honored to help those dealing with terminal illness live life as fully as possible, with hope; we strive to offer them dignity at a difficult time; and we open our hearts with love to them and their families. We thank our community members for allowing us to do our important work and for trusting us to support them in their time of need.

November 21
Children's Grief Awareness Day

November 21 is Children's Grief Awareness Day. Bereaved children are often referred to as the "forgotten mourners." Many bereaved children feel isolated in their grief, unaware that they are not alone. Children's Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity to tell children they are not forgotten and that there is support, hope and healing to be found.

the National Alliance for Grieving Children.

As part of our support for children, Hospicare's bereavement program is offering a Good Grief Event, Thursday, December 12. This will be a time for children and their caregivers to remember a deceased loved one using a creative activity. The evening will include time to reminisce about a loved one who died, a creative activity and a light dinner.

Not Always the Most
Wonderful Time of the Year

Adapted from an article by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization

The winter holidays are generally perceived as "the most wonderful time of the year." But if you are facing grief after the death of a loved one, the holidays may instead be a time filled with pain and sadness.

Even if your grief is not as fresh, the holidays may serve as an annual reminder of the loss--not only of your loved one, but of tradition and celebration.

At this time of year, grief experts stress the importance of making decisions that feel right to you, and giving yourself permission to make new or different choices at the holidays. They remind us of the following three important points:

Visit 15 STEPS to Benefit Hospicare!

In recognition of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month and in celebration of this season of thanksgiving, 15 STEPS on the Ithaca Commons will once again be donating to Hospicare 10% of sales from Friday, November 29 through Sunday, December 1.

"Both Ken and I lost fathers to pancreatic cancer. How wonderful it would have been if they had had access to hospice care like we have here. We feel strongly about Hospicare and have made them one of our adopted non-profits."

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Play to Benefit Hospicare

Hospicare is pleased to announce that we will be a recipient of a portion of the proceeds from an encore presentation of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

For three days in December, theater-goers can once again catch the acclaimed production by the Homecoming Players of this Edward Albee play. This acerbic, hilarious and shattering journey into the battlefields of marriage and academia is still as relevant today as it was when it first blazed onto Broadway 50 years ago.

In the spirit of the season, all profits from the show will be shared between Hospicare and three other local human service agencies: Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes, the Tompkins County SPCA and Tompkins Learning Partners.

Performances will take place Friday and Saturday, December 13 and 14, at 7:00 pm, and Sunday, December 15, at 2:00 pm, at Ithaca's Hangar Theatre in Cass Park. All tickets are just $20.

To purchase tickets visit TheatreIncognita.org.
