Hospicare's 30th Anniversary
Get Ready for the Celebration!

Hospicare's 30th anniversary dinner celebration is fast approaching. We are gearing up for an evening of good food, good conversation and fond memories, and we hope you'll join us.

The dinner will be November 8 at Celebrations Banquet Facility in Ithaca, NY. A welcoming reception begins at 6:00 with a sit-down dinner at 7:00. Our featured guest speaker will be Rhoda H, Meador, PhD, Director of the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute. Tickets are $30 per person.

Invitations have been sent out to as many of our wonderful supporters as possible, but if we missed you, we apologize. Even if you haven't received an invitation in the mail, you are heartily encouraged to attend.

Please note that seating is limited. Once the full number of reservations has been reached, we will be unable to accept additional requests for seating, so we encourage you to reserve your place at the dinner today.

Grief 101
After the First Year

Grief has no time limit. While we may hope our grief will ease after a year, there is no "normal" time for it to end. In fact, the journey is figuring out how to cope with grief and incorporate it into our lives going forward.

To help with this process, Hospicare is offering a one-time educational workshop, October 21, for bereaved adults whose loss occurred more than a year ago. At the workshop you will learn about the on-going grieving process and what to anticipate in your grief journey. Hospicare's bereavement counselors will help you take inventory of what you have achieved so far, and teach you new ways to understand your grief and how it has changed you and your world.

Grief 101: After the First Year is free and open to all adults grieving a loss that occurred more than a year ago.

Hospicare Bereavement Services
Needs Assessment Survey

Hospicare is currently conducting a Bereavement Services needs assessment survey, and we would love to have your input. The survey seeks to discover how much support our community offers for those suffering the loss of a loved one.

Please take a moment to click through to our survey. There are 14 questions that ask about your knowledge of Hospicare's bereavement services and about Tompkins County's need for bereavement support.  It should take you less than 10 minutes to finish. Your participation will be anonymous. Thank you.

Caring for your loved one
What the Dying Say They Want

When we care for the dying, we often find it difficult to know what to say or do for our loved one. We may feel awkward when speaking with him or her. We may even avoid visiting because we worry we don't know what to say--or, worse, that we'll say the wrong thing.

The Hospice Foundation of America offers some ideas on how to support someone who is facing the end of life. This list is compiled from hospice patients' suggestions.

Be honest with me. I can tell when your feelings or actions are insincere.

Laugh with me, cry with me. Allow me to express intense emotions.

Don't feel sorry for me. Your understanding helps preserve my dignity and pride.

Touch me. I want to be accepted despite the way I may look. Inside, I'm still the same person you always knew.
