Central Hardwoods Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis published

The Central Hardwoods Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis has been published. More than 30 scientists and forest managers contributed to the report, which is part of the Central Hardwoods Climate Change Response Framework. This assessment evaluates the vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems in the Central Hardwoods Region of Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri to a range of future climates. It considers information on current forest conditions, observed climate trends, projected climate changes, and impacts to forest ecosystems in order to assess vulnerability to climate change. The projected impacts of climate change will have important implications for economically valuable timber species, forest-dependent wildlife and plants, recreation, and long-range planning. A four page technical summary can be downloaded here. Contact lead author Leslie Brandt with questions.

NIACS hosts adaptation training in Missouri

Forest Adaptation Planning and Practices (FAPP) is an active, hands-on training to help natural resources managers incorporate climate change considerations into their own real-world forest management projects. NIACS held a FAPP training session February 4-5 in Osage Beach, MO, in association with the Missouri Natural Resources Conference. Participants brought projects ranging from small family forests to urban restoration projects. Future trainings are anticipated for other parts of the Midwest.

USDA launches new Regional Climate Hubs

In early February, the USDA announced the formation of seven Regional Climate Hubs that will provide information for farmers, ranchers and forest landowners to help them adapt to climate change and weather variability. The Midwest Hub including the three Central Hardwoods states is centered in Ames, Iowa. NIACS will support a Midwest Sub-Hub based in Houghton, Michigan that will provide technical support and education on climate change, forest management, and adaptation. The Sub-Hub will capitalize on many of the existing efforts that NIACS and partners have in progress such as the Climate Change Response Framework and the USFS Climate Change Resource Center. Learn more here
