Forest Adaptation Planning and Practices
The Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science and US Forest Service will be offering a 1.5-day hands-on training for forest managers. Managers will incorporate information from the Central Hardwoods Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis into their own real-world projects. Forest Adaptation Planning and Practices will be offered February 4 and 5 prior to the Missouri Natural Resources Conference. Participants will be eligible for 9.5 continuing education credits through the Missouri Society of American Foresters. More details can be found on the course webpage, and registration is offered through the Missouri Natural Resources Conference website. Central Hardwoods Projects Win Competitive Grant Award
The L-A-D Foundation (Missouri) and The Nature Conservancy, Indiana are recipients of The Wildlife Conservation Society's Climate Adaptation Fund 2013 grant awards. These projects incorporate information gained through the Central Hardwoods Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis to develop on-the-ground actions that will increase resilience of glade, woodland, and forest ecosystems to disturbances such as late-season droughts and extreme heat. The L-A-D Foundation is working with NIACS to develop an adaptation demonstration project that considers what adaptation actions could be used to facilitate shortleaf pine restoration on the Pioneer Forest. A summary of this demonstration project can be found here. The Nature Conservancy, Indiana project aims to reduce the dominance of mesic trees in the understory in favor of species more adapted to prolonged droughts.
