April was a busy month for citizen scientists and microbes! To compare microbes on Earth with those on the International Space Station, we've joined forces with UC Davis, the Science Cheerleaders and the public to collect microbes from surfaces including cell phones and shoes.
All samples will be sequenced and we'll post the findings here. Forty lucky samples will be sent the Space Station in November!
Thanks to you, we've already collected microbes from the San Antonio Spurs, Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings, Philadelphia Phillies and several other heavily populated venues (more people = more microbes!). Learn how you can get involved in
Project MERCCURI!
To recognize the substantial contributions and achievements of citizen scientists across the Nation, the White House will host a Champions of Change event on Citizen Science on June 4, 2013. Do you know a citizen science leader who is using citizen science to help catalyze positive change in his or her community? Members of the public are invited to nominate candidates for consideration.
Click here to nominate a Citizen Science Champion of Change before April 30, 2013 (under “Theme of Service,” choose “Citizen Science").
