On Tuesday, April 8, John Katzman, founder of The Princeton Review and lifelong education entrepreneur, spoke at the Colorado Mountain College Edwards campus. The evening was part of the 2014 Women in Philanthropy Distinguished Lecture Series, which is dedicated to bringing thought-provoking speakers to the Vail Valley community, while raising funds for CMC students and programs. Katzman spoke to a full house, with a cocktail reception immediately following.

His talk, entitled "Gradually, then Suddenly: Disruption in Higher Ed" highlighted the bold new trends in education and the ways in which colleges and universities around the world will need to embrace technology in order to survive. Always on the edge of innovation, Katzman willingly threw out some controversial new approaches and welcomed the lively discussion that ensued. The diverse audience was a blend of students, educators, administrators, and engaged community members.

As one of the guests said at the end of the evening, "I have no doubt that Mr. Katzman's ideas are the way education is headed - I'm just glad I got a preview before it takes us all by storm!"

After the lecture, John Katzman is joined by CMC leaders for a group photo. Greetings!

I am pleased to write to you for the first time as the Colorado Mountain College Foundation's CEO and vice president of advancement for CMC. During the short month since my arrival, I have been meeting CMC supporters, attending community events, visiting the many beautiful CMC locations, and meeting CMC's incredible students, faculty, and staff.

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to be at CMC after spending the past five years as vice president and chief advancement officer at IES Abroad in Chicago, Ill. With a 25-year-long career working in higher education fundraising, I look forward to working closely with all of you and my esteemed colleague, CMC President, Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser, to advance CMC's vision of becoming the most inclusive and innovative student-centered college in the nation, elevating the economic, social, cultural, and environmental vitality of our beautiful Rocky Mountain communities.

If I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you yet, I look forward to the opportunity to do so. In closing, thank you for your support of our terrific students and this incredibly unique and vibrant institution.

Sincerely,

AspenInstituteThe Aspen Institute and the Isaacson School for New Media Deepen Collaboration

Grant from Walter Isaacson benefits CMC New Media students

Thanks to a donation from Walter Isaacson, students at the Isaacson School for New Media at Colorado Mountain College will have free access to the world-class Aspen Institute events all year-round in Aspen, Colo.

"This collaboration is an opportunity to expose students to the incredible resources of the Institute. In turn, the collaboration with the Isaacson School will connect the Institute to a new and diverse group within the Roaring Fork Valley community", noted Walter Isaacson.  As the School's namesake, President and CEO of the Aspen Institute, Walter Isaacson is making this possible through his personal support and generous donation.

The program will take place over three years to build a formal connection between Isaacson School students and the Institute. Each year for three years, the Institute will allot tickets for public events for Isaacson School students. The process for selecting the students who get the tickets will be at the discretion of Isaacson School leadership.

A student competition will be held to determine which student qualifies to be granted a scholarship to the Aspen Ideas Festival. The competition criteria can be obtained by contacting the director of the Isaacson School, Robert Martin at [email protected].
