Club News JULY 2016

Our Action Plan Revealed...

or...

We Are Here to Make Good Things Happen For People

One of the things I love about our staff at the club is the opportunity to collaborate with them. They are hard workers and deep thinkers and I love picking their brains (and I often do!). I love our team and can honestly say that I feel like we have the most cohesive team of employees we have ever had. Our team members are creative, witty and smart. I call them the Dream Team. And I encourage them to do just that: DREAM.

We've recently had a lot of "dream" talks about possibilities at the club. As you know, if you've been following my newsletter, we've been dreaming about a remodel and possible expansion. And while it's super exciting to think about new carpet and updating our club's aesthetics, the thing that really gets me pumped up is exploring what we can DO better.

Our goals are simple:
  • We want to offer you first-class service.
  • We want to be the best part of your day.
  • We are here to make good things happen for people. For you!

And as we put into place action steps to upgrade your experience, we've had to examine what obstacles are in our way. This is where our surveys came in.

Last week I invited all of our Tennis Members to take a survey about the quality of service that we offer here at the club. The number of members who participated in the survey was astounding! 122 members took the time to share their thoughts. Wowza!

WINNER OF THE $25 GIFT CARD DRAWING: KARA NELSON!

Thank you so much to everyone who participated.  Previous to that, we asked ALL of our Members to participate in a Fitness survey. I thank you for all of your ideas and thoughts as to how we can serve you better.

What did the survey tell us?
Most of the survey answers pointed to what we already knew: we are meeting your needs.

It also shed (an indirect) light on the thing we feared: our software might be holding us back from offering you the World-Class service we are striving for.

That truth makes me cringe. We don't want to just "meet your needs." We strive to exceed your expectations.

What does that mean for you?
All I can say for sure is that improvements are on the horizon. Big ones.
Over the course of the next week, we will be taking a deeper look at our survey responses and peeling back the layers. My management team will be reaching out to members who shared comments and concerns to further research.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the warm responses you shared with us.

But there's one question I didn't ask that I wish I had:
What one thing could we do for you at the club

that would give you a first-class experience?

Will you take a moment to reply to this email with your response to this question? I'd love to hear from you. And I'm always listening.

HERE'S WHATS IN THE WORKS...OUR ACTION PLANS!

BACKEND: Software

Back to the software...I have been investigating options to our current software for about 6 years. There are problems that we have tried to resolve with our two software vendors, Gametime for court management and MindBody Online for club management. Some issues were resolved, others got bigger and bigger to where we are now - where - on the backend it sometimes feels like we have an elephant and a walrus sitting on our desks. I apologize for not delivering a better experience because of that elephant and walrus, but we are about to make a change.

I wish our walrus & elephant were this cute.

Thanks to your comments on the surveys, I felt finally compelled to dive in and commit to changing our software. Behind the scenes, this is no small task. There was no one software out there that was the perfect fit, but we found one that we think will be a great fit. It's called Club Automation and will run both our tennis court scheduling and our club management.

It was developed by people who own tennis clubs and have been in the business for decades. We hope to roll it out "live" in October and we'll be working swiftly behind the scenes to get it all set up. We will throw a few "Learning Parties" to show you hands-on how to use the new system when we get closer to the launch. WHEW - that was a lot on my mind. A software change is never to be taken lightly.

FRONT END: Remodel & Upgrades
We are moving ahead with plans to remodel the lobby. I am SO EXCITED about this! We are hoping to start in August and complete by October. Here is what is happening:
  • New flooring in lobby & locker rooms
  • New flooring in fitness area
  • Space re-arranged: Front desk, offices, and lounge are all going to be moved
  • New brighter tennis court lights to be installed August 4-7.  This is a $63,000 investment.
Future Plans (possibly next summer)
  • Locker Room upgrades
  • Heating and Air Conditioning system upgrades
  • Possible expansion in front of courts 1 & 2 for more personal training, small group training, and a cycling studio. We are working on plans now and only give this a 50-50 chance of coming to fruition. There are lots of complicated issues to resolve..
OK, that's a lot! Please keep your ideas coming and remember to reply to this email to tell me What one thing could we do for you at the club that would give you a first-class experience?

Thank you so much, you are the best members anywhere.

Word of the Week

"GRATITUDE"

"A moment of gratitude makes a difference in your attitude."
--Bruce Wilkinson
Member of the Month - Catherine Michelutti

When looking out across the courts at BTC/FF, your eyes may stop at the smallest player out there. Sure, our July Member of the Month may be small in stature and young in age, but once you get to know Catherine Michelutti, you will soon realize there is absolutely NOTHING small about her. Meet Catherine, an incoming sophomore at Squalicum High school who has big strokes, big ambitions and an even bigger smile.

Catherine began playing tennis 8 years ago as just a little girl. Her father played, and started getting Catherine involved in tennis clinics. It wasn't long before Catherine became a member herself and tennis quickly evolved into a passion. Strangers would stop and stare at the little girl who at first glance barely seemed larger than her racket. Her slight build and sweet disposition was so unassuming, it would take a few seconds for spectators to realize that yes, she was indeed hitting with a grown-adult, and was hitting the ball just as hard. Catherine plays in the Champs USTA circuit now, as well as High School Tennis, where last spring she placed second in the Washington State AA tournament as a freshman. When asked if she was nervous before the state finals, Catherine flashes her smile and calmly says, "I tried to channel my nervousness into excitement to stay loose." Not only is Catherine talented out on the court, she is wise beyond her years as well; a dangerous combination for opponents.

While Catherine's tennis is a big part of her life, it does not consume all her time. She has been playing the violin as long as she has been playing tennis and is in her school's orchestra. "I met some of my best friends in the orchestra!" In fact, she is attending Western's music festival this summer and has violin lessons sprinkled throughout her schedule as well. Combine that with her summer homework for the AP classes she will be taking come fall and participating in swim team, Catherine has learned how to manage her time very efficiently.

Although Catherine still has several years left in high school, she acknowledges what will come next. "It would be nice to play tennis in college, but that's a long way off!" Beyond her tennis career, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Catherine has big dreams. She wants to attend Yale, Harvard or Stanford University and become a doctor.

Catherine's father, the one who is responsible for introducing his daughter to the game of tennis, has a huge place in his daughter's heart. When asked if Catherine can beat her dad in a game of tennis, she sweetly answers, "Yes" but then immediately follows up with "He is the one who got me into it! Give him credit!" To Catherine's parents, kudos for raising a daughter who not only excels out on the tennis court but is one of our kindest BTC/FF members around. Way to go Catherine, we can't wait to watch you shine!
