June 2016

FROM THE TENNIS DIRECTOR

Matthew Iwersen 2

The word of the month for me is Patience.

This past weekend I was among many parents making the trek down to UW's Nordstrom Tennis Center to watch the High School 2A Tennis Championships. I have been attending for many years but this year was a bit different, my daughter Eloise was playing in the doubles bracket. I have watched plenty of tennis and have been very invested in the play of many of our own Bellingham tennis players. I have experienced the emotions of the wins and losses, to some degree, of the players and myself as a coach. I would always look at the matches as great learning experiences. I could stay positive in a tough loss and be supportive in the whole experience win or lose. Having your own daughter playing is just a bit different. I may say, I am glad I have some finger nails left because I was worried I might chew them all off after watching her matches.

The experience I realized is hers, not mine. I needed to remove my need to criticize/coach and let her feel the joy of winning and the pain of losing. I needed to be happy that she had earned the experience of participating in the State Tournament and be proud that she was out there competing.

Patience is something all parents need to excel at if you want to make it through raising a child. I had to keep my urge to coach and critique her game and let her learn through the experience. I know that I need to continue working on patience when living with this person that used to rely so heavily on me and now needs to show her independence from me. This part of my life is by far the most challenging part of being a coach and a father in regard to patience.

TENNIS TIP

Did You Know?

1.    That in doubles the receiving team loses a point if the receiver's partner touches the net while the ball is in play.

2.     That there is "the Code" which is the unwritten rules of fair play in tennis. Here are some of these rules:

            * A ball that can't be called out is in.
            * Courtesy is expected
            * Let is called when a ball rolls on the court
            * Talking between doubles partners when the ball is moving toward them is allowed
            * Doubles players should not talk when the ball is moving toward their opponent's court. * Have fun while playing....It is a game! (my code)
