If you're a member of our club or read our newsletters every week you're probably familiar with my articles. I am Fitness Director. That's right. I direct fitness. More specifically, I direct people to fitness. People like YOU, who desire a specific outcome, but haven't yet been able to achieve it.
I'd like to say that 100% of my clients get the results their looking for in the specific amount of time they desired. And this might be the strangest article you've ever read - because I'm about to tell you that is NOT the case. (I'm doing a great job at selling myself, right?) To increase the chances of being on the winning side, there is one factor, one question that if answered correctly, holds the key to your success: Do you care enough?
You might not believe it, but the thing about my job I love the most is sitting down with a client to talk about their desires. I love digging deep and finding out not only what they want to achieve, but why. I want to find out what makes them tick, what makes them happy, what obstacles they face and what kind of support they have. Getting to know someone like this, on a deep level, is my favorite part of personal training. Because I really, truly care about my clients.
Sadly, there are occasions where I think I might care about my client's goals more than even they do. I become fully invested in their goals and I want them to succeed! But if they do not want it badly, I cannot make them want it. I believe that when you want something badly enough, you must be willing to work extra hard, be disciplined and make sacrifices. The truth is, if you are not willing to do those things, it is not important enough to you. You do not care (about your goal) enough. And that's ok. Not every interest or desire in your life requires that kind of attention, focus and tenacity.
If your desire truly is important to you, make it your focus. Let nothing get in your way. If it is a top priority to you, then make it a top priority. Stop lying in bed thinking about it. Stop worrying, obsessing, even. If you really care about it, COMMIT to doing something about it.
What, exactly, will you commit to? Well, that all depends on your goals. The funny thing is that in fitness we use an acronym FITT - frequency, intensity, time and type - referring to the amount of effort you put into your training. Manipulating these factors affects your results. While this tool might sound fitness-only related (after all, the acronym actually spells "FITT"), taking a good look at these elements can help bring you closer to any goal. Don't believe me? Check it out.
It doesn't matter if your goal is to become a better speller, a gourmet cook or a marathon runner. These all apply to you.
Frequency - How often do you practice the necessary tasks that lead you closer to your goal?
Intensity - How hard are you really working at it? Try rating your effort 1-10.
Type - What activities are you doing? Are you doing the right things? Are you trying a variety of things? Is it specific and appropriate to your goal?
Time - How long are you doing it? Are you putting in enough or too much time?
What do you do with all this information? Write it down. Track what you are doing. Commit to memory these four things when you're getting results and keep doing them! Review them when results are lacking and reflect on what you can change.
If this article spoke to you because you have a goal that has not yet become a reality, I'd like to invite you to take me up on a free offer. Call and book a complimentary 60-minute consultation with myself or one of my trainers. We would love to help you find the path to your success.
