April 2016

FROM THE TENNIS DIRECTOR

Matthew Iwersen 2

The new word for this week is Learn. This reminds me of what my father told me sometime after college: "try and take a step forward each day of your life". That said I think we should try and learn something new every day. Many people think that my job quite often is saying the same thing over and over on a daily basis. While maybe the message is sometime the same I am constantly trying to find new ways to deliver the lesson. I am always looking for new techniques and drills that will help my clients improve. If we quit learning I believe we quit living.

When you come to the club and take a lesson or a personal training session our job is to explain to you, show you, and then let you experience the exercise/shot the instructor is working on with you. Our goal is to have you learn the skill and have you have practice that skill many times (some say 10,000) until you can finally say you own it. This is the learning experience that takes effort but an effort that in the end makes you feel better and smile more.

My hope is that when any member enters the club we offer some experience that enriches their day. Remember we want you to "Get Fit - Play Hard- Enjoy Life". I look forward to working with all my clients because I also learn from them each and every time.

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn."

Word of the Week

"LEARN"
The capacity to learn is a gift. The ability to learn is a skill. The willingness to learn is a choice.

TENNIS TIP

Here are some things that I have dug up on "Why to play Tennis"

  • Since tennis requires alertness and tactical thinking, it may generate new connections between nerves in the brain and promote a lifetime of continuing development of the brain, reported scientists at the University of Illinois
  • Helps control stress effectively because the physical, mental and emotional stress of tennis will force you to increase your capacity for dealing with stress.
  • Helps one learn to solve problems since tennis is a sport based on angles, geometry and physics.
  • Facilitates us to learn teamwork since successful doubles play depends on you and your partner's ability to communicate and play as a cohesive unit.
  • My Favorite: encourages us to have fun - because the healthy feelings of enjoyment, competitiveness and physical challenge are inherent in the sport.
