March was a busy month with a whirlwind of activity and travel, setting us up for an Awesome April!
I helped out at our Palm Springs Tennis Camp leading our campers with a warm up and having the honor of serving snack. It looked like everyone had a great time playing out in the sun!
Then the next week I travelled to Orlando for the International Healthy and Sports Racquet Club Association Trade Show. It is the biggest trade show all year and I love checking out the newest - and goofiest - equipment. Check out this video for some of the goofy .... the "Frogger" and the "Bucking Rower."
Bucking Rower from BTC/FF & Cycle Moles on Vimeo.
I was there primarily to make personal contact and see and feel the products of some of the vendors we may use in our club remodel - it is so much easier just to touch something and talk than try to do it with pictures and over the phone. Guess I'm a little old fashioned that way.
What's the fitness trend? Functional Equipment Many of the big names in fitness were offering their version of functional fitness equipment. This is a move away from traditional plate loaded weight machines (like our STRIVE equipment) in which you are seated and move you in one plane toward equipment that can be used for multiple plane movement in many positions that more mimics the motions we make in real life. I liked several pieces and we are evaluating how we may change the weight area to allow for activities with more movement. Our goal is to give you the equipment that will bring you the best results.
Joint Friendly Cardio Equipment: There were several versions of the curve treadmill - one that I loved included a way to change the tension so that it was similar to pushing a sled. Great for low impact strength training. Some of the ellipticals offered a narrower stance and better arm position with a variety of features for incline or variation in stride.
As you know, we are planning a major remodel of the lobby and new flooring in the fitness area. We'd like your opinion on fitness equipment and programs - I hope you will take our survey!
We had two fun social events last week: The Business to Business Social and our Staff Team Building Night. The business social was super fun (read on to see the info for the folks who came)! At our team building night, for the first time in club history, I grabbed a tennis racquet and hit some balls in cardio tennis drills. SO MUCH FUN! Some day when I have my knees replaced I will take up the game. Unfortunately my arthritic knees are complaining to me now (and will for about a week) that I did something I shouldn't have done. But it was worth it!
Which brings me to YOUR health - there are many ways to go about taking care of your own health. If you are a tennis player, I strongly suggest that you add strength and cardio training twice per week to your regular routine. Your game will improve, you will move easier, gain more power, become more stable and agile, get faster, and stay injury free longer. Plus, you give your knees, hips, and ankles a break from the hard surface of the tennis courts.
If you aren't sure what to do for strength or cardio training, try one of our GET Fit Group Training sessions or take some time to work with our skilled personal trainers. It is so much easier to do it correctly when you are working with one of our experienced fitness professionals!

Member of the Month - Matthieu Jarrett
|
If you have had the opportunity to watch our April Member of the Month out on the tennis court, you would agree it looks like he has been playing longer than just 6.5 years. If you have had a chance to chat with him, you would never believe he is only a junior in high school. His maturity, articulation, love of the game and desire to improve are just several of the reasons Matthieu Jarrett was chosen as one of our four Junior Scholarship Winners of 2016 AND our April Member of the Month. It's fitting soccer was the sport Matthieu played as a youngster (he was named after a French soccer player!) While he enjoyed throwing around the football with friends and playing basketball, he would never really consider his family an "athletic" family. For Matthieu's 10th birthday, his father bought him a tennis racket. They had some family friends who were tennis players, so Matthieu began hitting with them. The hobby turned into clinics and lessons at the Club and soon he was hooked. "Whether winning or losing, I just love it," Matthieu says of the game. Matthieu's game has improved significantly and this past season he found himself playing #1 doubles for the Sehome High School varsity tennis team. He lost in the quarterfinals of districts to his fellow Sehome doubles team, but has high hopes for this off-season and next year. "I am working on my fitness this off-season. Every little piece gives you an edge. I want to work on my legs and getting more explosive, " Matthieu says with a smile. As a recipient of the BTC/FF Junior Tennis Scholarship, Matthieu receives an annual membership and package valued at $2500.. "I'm the only one from Sehome, "Matthieu says with a laugh, " but we are all friends." Matthieu credits his time with Club Pro Matthew to improving his mental game as well. While he is only 16 years old, Matthieu's maturity and ability to see beyond the physicality of the game is what sets him apart from many others his age. "One of the beautiful things about tennis... Through my tennis I am actually able to bond with my dad. He goes to my tournaments, cheers me on and is learning the game." While we bet Matthieu's father had no idea what he was getting into when he purchased that tennis racket as a gift, it is so special to see the bond the game has brought to their family. "My brother plays basketball and complains about going to my tournaments but by the end he is having fun and cheering me on!" Matthieu keeps busy off the tennis court as well. He loves reading, playing the violin, radio talk shows and is currently learning French. He enjoys getting together with his friends to play music and video games. Matthieu is also in the photography club at school, a group that meets once a month to work on their photo skills. Hence, before each of Matthieu's tennis matches he begs his mom to "get a cool pic of me!" Matthieu, regardless if your mom is able to capture a perfect snapshot of your drop-shot or killer serve, you are pretty cool in our books. Thanks for being such a great scholarship recipient and working so hard both on and off the court.
Our Member of the Month receives a $25 gift certificate to the Pro Shop
