January 2016

FROM THE TENNIS DIRECTOR
Matthew Iwersen 2

We are in the thick of the winter season and I know that getting courts can at times be challenging. So in the spirit of sharing please be considerate and play by the rules when using your court reservations. We are allowed three advanced reservations from Sunday through Saturday.  Let's try to work together so we can all share in all the fun on the court. If you need more time on the court see if a clinic at your level has some drop-in slots available.  They are great fun and maybe you can pick up something new for your game.

We have some fun social tennis events coming up that could help you have more time on the court, meet some new people, and improve your game. The drop-in Valentine Day Doubles for the player just getting into or back into the game is this coming Friday February 12th at 6:15pm. Who knows, maybe another love match will develop from this! The monthly Welcome Round Robin is on Sunday February 28th at 1:15pm is always a good way to meet some of the new members.

There are still a few spots for the Palm Springs Camp March 13-16th. This could be the most fun you had while in Palm Springs. You could play like the pro's in the morning and then watch them the rest of the day at the BNP Paribas Open. All the world class players will be there.

"SHARE"

TENNIS TIP

Since the word of the week is "Share" let's see how this could help your game;
  • If you have discovered a new technique or way to hit a shot share this with your friends.
  • If you need a new partner to hit with share that information with Betty or me.
  • If you have a good hit with a new member share his/her number with other members you think would be fun for them to have a good hit.
  • Share by playing with a junior and introducing them to the game that they can be playing at your age.
  • The more we share the better we all get.

WWU IS NATIONALS BOUND!

This past weekend the Western Washington University Club Tennis Team traveled to Yakima, Wa to compete in the USTA Tennis on Campus Pacific Northwest Sectionals tournament.

With the top seed in the tournament WWU team 1 won tough battles against teams from Seattle University and University of Oregon to face Oregon State. After losing a close match to Oregon State, WWU A team faced off against Gonzaga in a match for 3rd and 4th place. The top 3 teams receive a bid to the TOC Nationals Tournament. In a nail biter, WWU A team beat out Gonzaga for 3rd place and a bid to the national tournament.

This year marks the 17th consecutive year that WWU has qualified for nationals. No other club tennis team in any division has ever achieved this accomplishment. The team now looks forward to preparing for the Nationals Tournament in April in Cary, North Carolina.

Give a big shout out to Nate at the front desk. He is one of the captains!
