FROM THE TENNIS DIRECTOR
Matthew Iwersen 2

Happy New Year!  This means get a good start
to 2016! Activities to look forward to this winter:

  • The Club Tennis Championships; This happens January 30 & 31. Saturday is Doubles and Sunday will be the Singles. We are also having a potluck Chili Cook Off. So fire up your game and your culinary skills for this fun filled weekend.
  • Australian Open Round Robin: Celebrate the Australian Open with us, and participate in a fun Round Robin! When you are not on the court, you can watch the Australian Open on our big screen TV while munching some snacks. We will have beer, and a sausage sizzle available...Crikey!
  • Welcome Round Robins; These happen once a month and we encourage all new members to come out and play. Veteran members are welcome to come and meet some new faces.
  • Junior Slugfests: These also happen once a month and we have opened it up to the middle school and JV level players. Great way for kids to expend their energy on a Friday night. Pizza and drinks are part of the fun.
  • Palm Springs Tennis Camp: You know you will have the doldrums by Mid-March so join us for great tennis on the court and later go watch the best in the world at the BNP Paribas Open. This should keep you warm just thinking about it. Sign up now!

So don't get a late Start on this year join for all the fun on the courts.

TENNIS TIP

Start making your serve Bigger

Serves are without a doubt one of the most important shots in the game. With this being said why do we only practice it occasionally or start matches saying first one in? To me this is crazy. When your serve is on the rest of your game usually seems easier. Winning free points because of your serve saves you the energy to work hard when returning serve. I think that is enough incentive to go out and hit a basket of ball on a regular basis. It is the one shot you can really practice on your own. Here is something to try while you are honing your serve:

Tip: Grip your racket with the continental grip and place the handle so your hand covers the bottom with your pinky finger off or almost off the handle. This provides more whip when contacting the ball at the peak of your toss and reach.

So start
making the game easier and more rewarding and get out there and grab the member basket of balls and practice one of the most important shots in tennis.

Shane is teaming up with Reece Gilbert this spring to represent Sehome HS in the 2A state championships.
