| Inside a towel tent to record some lines
|
Happy Heart Month!
February is heart month and it's a good thing our word of the week is *LOVE*. So here is my monthly challenge: Do something that you LOVE that is from (or good for) your heart.
The picture to the left is me recording some lines for one of the Healthy Knees videos. For my book, Healthy Knees Cycling (now at the Club and Village Books!), I also filmed some videos and we had to re-record a couple of lines (thus me in the towel tent - towels to deaden the echo around me).
I've learned a lot about doing something you love that comes from the heart. It's a funny path that we sometimes take to get to where we are.
Many of you know that my background is actually in Environmental Science (I'm a WWU Huxley grad - go tree huggers!) and worked on the external environment for many years (my specialty was garbage and recycling). Then, in 2000, my husband and I had this extraordinary opportunity to buy the Club. He asked me if I thought I could run a tennis club and I said "sure, how hard could that be?!" Well, harder than I thought, but over the years I have come to LOVE what I get to do here.
Instead of the external environment, I get to work on the internal environment of everyone who comes in our doors - helping you to become healthier and happier. That makes my heart fill with love!
Back to the towel tent...the other thing I've launched is another love - you know that my book Healthy Knees Cycling hit international #1 (that still astounds me and THANKS TO EVERYONE who helped get it there!), well I'm continuing to work on this passion - to help others reduce their knee pain and get stronger so you can live life to the fullest. I will be launching my "Healthy Knees Coach" program in June to train other fitness professionals around the country how to train those with hip, knee, and ankle pains. Very exciting and very scary all at once.
So, this month, I encourage you to: - Show Love to those you care about
- Try a new heart-healthy activity - elliptical, Curve machine, rower, cycling!
- Do something - a craft? a hobby? that you Love which you haven't for a while
- Listen to some music that you Love - pull out an old album!
- Phone an old friend and share some long-distance love
- Make a meal that you Love and share it with a friend
- Write a nice note filled with love and mail it to a relative
I am continually grateful for the caring and love I see and feel here at the Club. Happy Heart Month and Thank you all! With Love ~ Robin And as a Bonus, here is a PDF with 20 Minute Cardio Workouts for you!

ANNOUNCEMENTS - Tell your friends!

ONLY 10 Tennis Memberships Remain
And then we will cap membership
Once we cap, we will start a waitlist and give priority to Fitness Members who'd like to upgrade to tennis. Last time we had a waitlist it was a year-long!
Tell your friends that now is the time to join!
This is our busiest time of the year and we know the courts are full. We are far under the USTA guidelines for members per court, but we want you to be able to keep booking courts, so we will cap early. Please remember that while it might be a challenge to advance book 3 courts per week, we DO have the most generous court reservation policy in the northwest. Most other clubs only allow one or two courts - maximum - on the books at one time. We continue to give you the best tennis value on the west coast.
If you find you aren't playing as much tennis as you'd like, come on up to the fitness area! Improving your core strength will improve your tennis game, guaranteed! Try some cardio training to improve your stamina. Studies show that as we age, if we don't use it, we lose it. Schedule an appointment with one of our talented Personal Trainers to learn specifics on how you can improve your tennis game through improving your fitness.

Word of the Week
|
"LOVE" Do more of what you LOVE. "I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: 'If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?' And whenever the answer has been 'No' for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something." -- Steve Jobs

Member of the Month: Linda Nestor
|
With a month of 2016 under our belts, February is a great time to take a look back and reflect on how our daily actions are helping us (or hindering us) to reach our goals. If our 5AM alarm wake-up calls are getting the snooze button or we just can't seem to remember to log meals into our journals, our February Member of the Month has shown us a simple approach can yield HUGE results.
Meet Linda Nestor, a fitness member who has lost 100 pounds by adhering to the mindset "move more, eat less." She hasn't followed any rigid diet plan nor spends hours upon hours working out. That being said, Linda has put in the hard work. She has made sacrifices (her husband and kids love sweets!) and logged the exercise (she began by following a Couch to 5k program and now regularly attends the VIP training class at the Club along with miles on the treadmill.)
When asked if Linda has any advice for others trying to drop some weight she talks about finding things you like to eat that are between 100-200 calories. Cooking is also a family affair at the Nestor home, with each of her children being in charge of cooking dinner one night a week. Linda keeps active walking her two Portuguese water dogs and even finds that exercise is directly benefiting her oldest dog. Linda notices that the more they get out and walk, the less his epilepsy acts up. "He sleeps better, too!"
The dog isn't the only one benefitting from Linda's new approach to life. "I had never wanted to go skiing before because I wasn't strong enough." Linda recently went skiing with her kids for the first time and was so happy she started crying at lunch. A BTC/FF staffer put it perfectly: "Linda is such an inspiration. She made a commitment to herself and she's keeping it!"
While many of us would be happy with that 100 pound weight loss, Linda has her sights on more. "I want to be able to run for an hour comfortably," she says, "and keep up with my husband running outside. " Join us in cheering for Linda, whether she is tacking those miles on the treadmill in the gym or on the muddy trails outside. Linda, thank you for sharing your motivating weight loss formula of moving more and eating less. You are such a great example of what can happen when small lifestyle changes add up.
