This Year's Theme: Realize A Dream
I just celebrated another birthday and repeated my tradition for riding my bike for as many miles as I am old. This year it was 54 miles...so you know what that means. I figure that, with any luck, I might be half-way through life. I choose to look at the second half of life as a chance to do more, not less.
Each year I select a theme and this year's theme is "Realize a Dream." You never know how much time you actually have in life and now is as good as any to get going on some of those bucket list items.
I will make it my best effort this year to realize at least one of my dreams and maybe even two. I will first share with you that I went down the path last year of one of my dreams - but somewhere along the way, I decided that it wasn't right for me. Yes, I withdrew from the grad school program. While I absolutely loved the thought of that knowledge (I was studying Exercise Science/Kinesiology), I realized it wasn't really what I wanted or needed.
So I switched gears to pursue another course of action which led me to write two books: "Younger Longer" is done (and here at the Club!) and I am close to submitting the second book to the publisher, "Heal Your Knees Through Cycling" (or something like that - my publisher is giving it some thought).
This gets me to the next two dreams that I will strive to accomplish in 2016.
DREAM #1 - To physically expand the club to the fullest extent possible in order to bring you an even better experience. It has always been my goal to make this club the very best it can be in terms of programs, facility, and experience. With focus on the facility...Doug and I have hired an architect to draw up plans for opening the area above the fitness room for viewing onto the courts and some additional office space. Since we have owned the Club we have continually reinvested in the facility to bring upgrades, in one form or another, every year. This particular upgrade will include a remodel of the lobby area. Of course we have to see what the plans mean and price tag does matter in the go/no go decision.
DREAM #2 - To help more people reduce knee pain and improve knee function and strength. To this end I have almost completed the Heal Your Knees Through Cycling book and launched two Healthy Knees Cycling classes this fall. I'm now turning my focus to developing and launching a "train the trainer" program to teach other instructors the particular methods to use when working with folks who have knee (and hip and ankle) issues. I am shooting to kick-off this program near the end of winter.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM? What is it that you feel compelled to complete or accomplish? Do you want to learn a new skill? Travel to new places? Re-invigorate some relationships? Learn another language? Start a new business?
PICK YOUR DREAM: It can be a small dream or a great big hairy audacious dream...write them down, give it some thought - which one is most important to you? Start with that one, tell someone about it (it keeps you more accountable) and do something every week that gets you closer to your dream. Let me know how it turns out!
