We don't have to go far to see that a lot of good things are happening in our schools. Last Saturday I attended part of the First LEGO League robotics competition hosted by Carver Road Middle School. In addition to teams from each of our middle schools and two of our elementary schools, teams from across a wide region in Georgia participated. A team from Thomasville City Schools left home at 4:00 a.m. to reach Griffin before the starting time. Teams designed and programmed robots made from Legos and other electronic components to perform tasks on predetermined challenge boards. Team members explained how the robots were designed and tested in addition to demonstrating the robots capabilities on the challenge board. In addition, team members presented a project they had undertaken to support the environment and talked about the underlying values of teamwork, communication, etc. used in their joint work. Impressive is the word that comes to mind as I watched this unfold. What better example could we have of students transferring classroom learning into real-life activities - the essence of education. Of course, a big thanks goes to all those who serve as team sponsors and coaches giving time from their weekend to let the students compete so admirably. Several GSCS teams qualified to move on to the next round of competition. It was a day well spent.

In spite of all the negative that grabs the headlines, often without all the facts, our students do learn and grow. For sure, we must work on the problems and challenges that interfere with the educational environment, but we must never lose sight that working with students matters.

Have a great weekend!

GEORGIA STUDENT LAUNCHES FOOD FINDER GA
Message from the GaDOE

There is a Georgia-developed resource available to connect food-insecure children - and adults trying to help - with food resources.

Food Finder GA, a web app developed by Peachtree Ridge High School graduate Jack Griffin, uses geo-targeting to direct users to the free food resource closest to their home, school, or current location. It was built initially for Gwinnett County students, but expanded in the fall of 2015 to serve all food-insecure students in the state of Georgia, through a network of more than 1,000 resource providers.

FREE, EASY & AWESOME GIFTS TO GIVE YOUR STUDENTS

So it's Christmas time again, and you may be wondering what you should get your students. Or if you should get them anything. Or how on earth you could find the time or money to buy or make even a small gift for all your students.

Well, the good news is that you can give your students great gifts that will only take about 10 minutes to prepare and will cost you NO MONEY!
  • Free homework passes. This was my go-to gift for my students. Simply print them off on colored paper and hand them out. Just be sure to include any necessary fine print.
Click HERE for a free template.
  • Homework grace-day passes. If you don't want to give out a homework pass, what about a pass that will allow the student an extra day to complete the homework. That'd be a great thing to have for a day they leave their homework at home, completely forget an assignment or just have an unusually busy night.
  • Special privilege pass. If you teach a self-contained classroom, think of a privilege that you can give your students, such as eating lunch with you, extra computer time, etc. Give each student a pass that they can redeem in the future.
*One last tip: Save yourself a bookkeeping nightmare & require the students to turn in the pass when they want to redeem it. And tell them upfront that if they lose it then it is, unfortunately, gone.
