GSCS HIGH SCHOOL
EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH

A.Z. KELSEY
ACADEMY

Karla Childs is A.Z. Kelsey's Employee of the Month.  Mrs. Childs is a team player who willingly collaborates with her team members to help students be successful.  She is a solutions-oriented person who is willing to step in when something needs to be done.  Her efforts are greatly appreciated at A.Z. Kelsey.

GRIFFIN HIGH
SCHOOL

Griffin High's Employees of the Month are Lisa Henderson and Sharon Adams for coordinating the Science Fair. These ladies organized and conducted the only high school science fair in Spalding County. They had great projects that students completed with their support. They recruited professionals and UGA scientist to judge. It was a very successful fair.  Thank you to these two ladies for their hard work and effort in making the GHS first annual Science Fair Symposium a success.

MAINSTAY ACADEMY
Mainstay Academy's Employees of the Month are our three TAPP teachers: Grant Adams, Rodney Miles and Josh Cavender and their mentors: Heidi Thompson, Julie Neel and Jill Braswell. Planning and delivering instruction while managing the behavior or our students with Severe EBD is a constant challenge.  These employees have added responsibilities of TAPP classes, portfolio development, observations and regular meetings to their duties and responsibilities.  They are doing a SUPER GREAT job balancing everything while keeping student performance in focus.

SPALDING HIGH
SCHOOL
SHS would like to recognize Kristine Ahrens as the Employee of the Month. Her commitment to improving classroom instruction is evident in her day-to-day practices. She is constantly looking to find new and innovative ways to help our students meet the challenges of today's classroom. She embraces opportunities for professional learning and is willing to share for the betterment of all students at Spalding High School. She works hard and is dedicated to teaching and learning as her profession.

It is hard to believe ten school days remain before we head into 2016. 2015 has truly gone by fast.  I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving break as we head toward the Christmas break and 2016 beyond.

This week I attended the Winter Conference of the Georgia School Boards Association with all five of our local school board members. Our board of education was honored as a Quality Board at the conference, a distinction shared by 31 other local boards of education.  I hope you will congratulate our board members on meeting the criteria to attain this special designation.

Let me highlight an important item approved at Tuesday's board meeting. The board approved my request to engage
Phi Delta Kappa to perform a curriculum audit of our school system. We last had such an audit in 1997, and the time is right to update the findings and recommendations a comprehensive audit like this can provide. A curriculum audit provides a detailed look at our teaching and learning process from the board governance/policy level through curriculum adoption/presentation/assessment to professional learning.  Alignment of our efforts is the primary goal of the audit. I expect multiple recommendations for improvement along with a series of commendations for areas where we perform well. This will require preparation in advance of the audit team, but I am convinced that will move us forward as we adopt a new strategic plan, change to Milestones assessments, and continue improving our use of Teacher Keys and Leader Keys evaluation systems. We are looking toward February or March to conduct the audit. I'll keep you updated as we move forward.

Have a great weekend!

Superintendent
