GSCS TEST SCORES RELEASED
The Georgia Milestones test scores for Griffin-Spalding County were released today by the Georgia Department of Education.

Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 used the newly-created Milestones to assess student learning.

"Generally speaking, the results of these tests are not good and are disappointing when compared to the state averages which are themselves disappointing.  However, this new benchmark will show us where and what we need to improve in our instructional program," said Superintendent Jim Smith. "We are not looking through the data to find excuses. We are looking through the data to find clues leading to a better correlation between instructional practices and the expectations being assessed."

School leadership teams have been combing through the data for the past several days looking for areas where we need to build capacity for performance and improving tasks including problem -solving and critical thinking skills that are highlighted in the Milestones.

GSCS NEW TEACHER INDUCTION
The GSCS New Teacher Induction Program is in full implementation. Our system's first and second-year teachers are provided district-level professional development on important topics such as assessment, behavior management, RTI and differentiation. New GSCS teachers, along with first through third-year teachers, also meet together monthly at their schools to share experiences, seek advice and spend valuable learning time with their mentors and peers.

Here are five important reasons we invest in our new teacher induction program:
1. It improves new teacher effectiveness. New teachers, even the best and brightest, struggle in their early years of teaching. Teacher induction helps improve areas such as classroom management and discipline issues, how to differentiate instruction and strategies for working with parents and the community.
2. Mentoring suits the work style of GenX and Millennial new teachers. Today's new younger teaching force is comprised primarily of Generation X (born 1968-79) and Millennial (born after 1979), who are more independent and self-reliant but they value mentor collaboration, collective actions, training and skill development and are comfortable with a shared leadership style.
3. It can attract teacher talent. In today's digital world, word spreads about schools which are supportive and have induction programs and which do not. High-quality professional development can attract the best new teacher talent.
4. It creates a collaborative culture and teacher leadership. Teaching can be an isolated profession where feedback and coaching is not welcome. Strong induction programs foster a collaborative culture and teacher leadership.  Being mentored during the first three years of their careers allows new teachers the opportunity to learn alongside their peers and more experienced colleagues.
5. It improves student success. Student success is the ultimate goal. Induction programs have a direct impact on teacher effectiveness, teacher retention and teacher leadership, all of which have a direct impact on student success. Our high-quality induction program propels new teachers to get better faster with the aid of mentors, induction trainers, principals and district leaders.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING FOR PARAPROS AND CLASSIFIED STAFF
The GSCS Human Resources Department will be sponsoring professional learning courses for our paraprofessionals and classified staff on January 4, 2016 and February 12, 2016.  All staff interested in taking these courses should register in PDExpress.

It's important to continue developing our paraprofessionals and classified staff because paraprofessionals support our teachers with instructional methods, behavior management, and facilitating interactions with peers and parents.  Likewise, our classified staff is more involved in the use of technology, they help to foster independence in children and sometime provide personal care. Training our classified staff increases their capacity and supports them in improving the quality of education for every student.

IRS IMPERSONATION PHONE SCAM
An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers has been making the rounds throughout the country. Callers claim to be employees of the IRSbut are not. These con artist use fake names, bogus IRS badge numbers and usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver's license.

Note that the IRS will never: 1) call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill; 2) demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe; 3) require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card; 4) ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or 5) threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

If you know you don't owe taxes and receive a call like this, do not give out any information and hang up immediately. Report the call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1-800-366-4484.

If you know or think you owe on your taxes call the IRS at
1-800-829-1040 and let the IRS workers help you.

According to the TIGTA, nearly 4,550 victims have collectively paid over $23 million as a result of the scam.
