What is it? The Edcamp movement has gained in popularity over the last few years because it is not like traditional conferences in that there are no keynote speakers, there are no fees to attend and participants are encouraged to share their knowledge with others. Sessions are generated by the participants that morning. Some sessions are lead by teachers who want to share their knowledge regarding a topic. Others are simply conversations for those who want to learn more.
What do I bring? A WIFI capable device to access resources.

As I prepare for a new school year in a new position, I think more and more about what really matters. Our vision matters. It matters because when we transform our community through a quality public education, our students will have significantly brighter futures. GSCS is in a thriving area with a school system that is centered on college and career preparation. The Griffin Region College and Career Academy matters. Three dual-enrollment collegiate partners and four connected high schools in three school systems ensure that this forward-thinking educational program is poised to dramatically impact the futures of our students and our community. Our values matter. Competency, Open Communication, Loyalty, Defined Autonomy and Respect helped us navigate rough waters and yet remain upright. These values represent more than just one idea of integrity and good behavior; they are the very foundation of what matters as we work daily to be better than we were the day before. How we conduct ourselves on a daily basis transforms the character of our students who watch us and to our community that looks to us for leadership. What we do matters. We must be better every day. We must do our jobs well, communicate with others effectively and conduct ourselves with loyalty and integrity to this system. We must also work within our defined parameters, yet own our responsibilities and outcomes, and treat others with respect and courtesy. Who we are should be evident by what we do. We are the architects of our students' significant futures. Make no mistake; that is a tremendous responsibility. As I begin my new assignment as your superintendent, I ask you to join me in going that extra mile. Make the experience of every student a good one, every day. You are valued, and you are relevant to what we do. Welcome back, and to our new employees, welcome aboard!

TEACHER PAY SCALE ADJUSTMENTS The Griffin-Spalding County School System contracted with Dennis Fordham, a salary study consultant, to evaluate the competitiveness of the system's pay scales with 12 other school districts. The districts chosen for comparison were either direct competitors for talent or a similar size district based on student count. The results of the study found that steps 0-9 of the Teacher Salary Schedule were below the group average while steps 10-23+ were above the group average. From these results, the recommendation to the Board of Education as part of the FY16 Budget included increases to the local supplement on steps 0-9 to a minimum of 6% of the State-based salary and grandfathered in any step that was already above the 6% base supplement. This change brings those steps, 0-9, to the group average to be more competitive. Steps 10+ were held the same since they were above the group average and deemed competitive. "The purpose of the salary study was to determine competitiveness not give raises," stated Ryan McLemore, chief financial officer. "No changes have been made to the last half of the scale since they have been and continue to be above the group average." Step and salary changes occur in September for 190-day employees. |

GSCS PREPARES FOR ADVANCED/SACS RE-ACCREDITATION The Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) is preparing for an AdvancED/SACS re-accreditation process. This process is a comprehensive program of internal and external review, supported by research-based standards and dedicated to helping schools, districts and education providers continuously improve. Currently, GSCS and each of its schools are fully accredited. Every school in the Griffin-Spalding County School System meets or exceeds the accreditation standards that support student achievement. In Spring 2017, the school district will host an AdvancED External Review Team to certify our district's accreditation for another five years. Read more... |
