We are rapidly coming to the end of another school year when all of the hard work done since August is recognized. Honors programs, band and chorus concerts, graduation exercises, etc. represent the culmination of a successful year. Both students and staff deserve to celebrate. Enjoy these moments. On another note, we are continuing work on the FY16 school system budget. Thankfully, the General Assembly and Governor included funding to restore a portion of the austerity cuts that we have experienced over the past thirteen years. This additional funding allowed us to move forward with conducting a salary study of the classified, certified and administrative pay scales. The purpose of the study is to research ways to reestablish the competitive balance and structure of our salaries after several years of no or small pay increases. Our consultant obtained information from neighboring and similar size school districts as well as data on private employment practices related to certain jobs not specific to school districts. I view this process as part of a long-term plan to support our recruitment and retention efforts. Of course, the budget will ultimately determine how much we are able to modify the salary schedules. As work progresses, I will keep you informed. Finally, I want to highlight an event from last week. Jackie Summerville from Orrs Elementary was honored as the GSCS Teacher of the Year during the Georgia Teacher of the Year luncheon in Atlanta. Around 150 Teachers of the Year from across the state were present. Each was recognized by State Superintendent Richard Woods for being an outstanding example of dedication to students. A special thank you to Jackie for being an exceptional educator and for representing GSCS so well! Only two weeks left in the 2014-15 school year. Enjoy them!

WHAT DO COMMUNITY AND STAFF MEMBERS WANT IN THE NEXT SUPERINTENDENT?
The Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education asked that question in a survey during their superintendent search. Board members reviewed the input as part of their applicant review. About 900 people responded.
Willing to listen, willing to make tough decisions and an ability to improve student achievement topped the list. But what really mattered? Honesty and high ethical and moral standards.
GSCS employees were asked for input on the same characteristics. In addition, staff indicated the importance of willing to admit problems and mistakes, ability to attract and retain high quality teachers and staff and a strong work ethic.

SIT UP STRAIGHT...MAY IS NATIONAL CORRECT POSTURE MONTH
Poor posture can cause more problems than you may think. When you slouch, you add more stress to your muscles and joints, which in turn can lead to arthritis and degeneration in your joints. It also impairs your breathing, depriving you of oxygen and making you more tired. It impedes circulation and even digestion, not to mention it has a negative effect on our attitudes.
ADVANTAGES OF GOOD POSTURE:
- Extra height - up to 3 inches of our natural body height can be lost with poor posture. With good posture, we can regain our full height.
- Fatigue Prevention - good posture means the body is using muscles more efficiently, meaning less energy is being spent keeping the body in position.
- Prevention of strains, back ache and muscular pain.
- Prevention of wear on the joints and less strain on the body's ligaments.
- Prevention of secondary complications such as arthritis and impairment of circulatory and digestive systems.
- Improved appearance - people with good posture, carry themselves in a more natural manner and generally look better than those whose posture is out of balance.
There's no better time than now to evaluate your own posture and find ways to improve it, after all, May is National Correct Posture Month, so sit up straight and click HERE to learn more about good posture.
