I hope each of you had a restful Spring Break and are ready to close out the final 20 days of the school year in style.  Several of you have told me how fast this year has gone by. In reality, every year seems to move quickly when packed with all of the activities that make up a dynamic school experience. Thank you for what you do for our students and their families.

The past week has been one of contrasts. Watching colleagues arrested is not part of how any of us want our school district defined. Yet, we find ourselves in a process, internal and external, designed to discover and document facts surrounding serious allegations. The time will come when facts, documentation and other relevant factors will
be reconciled with charges to determine a resolution. The district will continue to cooperate with law enforcement while this process moves forward.  That is our obligation.
It is also our obligation to continue serving our students and families in the professional manner expected of us. I have seen this demonstrated at Atkinson and know it will be true across the district.

In contrast, I was able to experience the unbounded excitement of First Grade Farm Day at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds. Up close encounters with horses, cows, chickens and honeybees intermingled with demonstrations
on farming techniques and other related topics held the attention of almost 900 first graders. I heard some great questions posed by students, some of which challenged the abilities of the presenters.  It was also obvious that the students were prepared for Farm Day by the answers they gave to the questions posed to them.  Great day, great event!  Thank you to the Kiwanis Club, teachers and everyone who made the day special.

Have a great weekend.

Jim Smith
interim Superintendent

EDUCATION REFORM COMMISSION SEEKS INPUT

Gov. Nathan Deal's Education Reform Commission is looking for public input as it considers an overhaul of state funding, early childhood education, teacher pay and other school related policies. The group has established a new email address where people can send thoughts about proposals: erc@opb.georgia.gov.

At the end of July, subcommittees will present their recommendations for revising funding and early childhood development policies. Other subcommittees will issue their proposals later.

GEORGIA SCHOOLS DO MORE WITH LESS

Article by Jay Bookman, My Opinion, Atlanta Journal Constitution

Earlier this week, Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation intended to implement a so-called Opportunity School District statewide. If voters approve a constitutional amendment in November 2016, the bill would give the governor's office the power to overrule local school boards and seize operation of as many as 100 public schools that it deems to be failing. That's a lot of power to be placed in the hands of one person, but defenders of the controversial program claim it is justified by the crisis...
