GSCS STUDENT RECEIVES DIPLOMA FROM HB91

On Monday, March 30,  Governor Nathan Deal
signed House Bill 91 (HB91) into law. This law provides
that students shall no
longer be required to earn
a passing score on any graduation tests to earn
a high school diploma.

The law also allows
students no longer enrolled
the ability to petition the
local board of education
for a diploma.
GSCS students whose sole reason for not receiving a high school
diploma was due to not
passing any part of the graduation tests now have
the opportunity to petition
for a diploma
.

On April 8, former Spalding
High student Emerson Demorris Furlow was the
first GSCS student to be approved under HB91 to receive his high school
diploma. He is now a high school graduate!

Spring has sprung! The weather is warmer, leaves are returning to the trees and the Braves are back on the baseball diamond.  So far, the Braves have won all three of the games they've played.  A great start with a long way to go.  Then, there is the pollen which is affecting many of us; another sure sign spring is here. Take care of yourself so that we can finish the upcoming week strong and move into an enjoyable and restful spring break.

The Georgia Milestones testing has been a major focus this week. The requirement to test 30% of our students online has not been without challenges.  We did experience some technical difficulties early in the week.  But, thanks to the hard work of our testing coordinators and instructional technology team, testing progressed and was running smoothly by the end of the week.  We have seen how flexible and resilient our students can be. Kudos to them for remaining focused. Thank you to all of our staff for supporting our students in such a fine manner.

One more week until Spring Break, let's make it a great one!

Sincerely,
Jim Smith
Interim Superintendent

A.Z. KELSEY STUDENTS EXPERIENCE THE MOST TRUSTED AIRLINE

A.Z. Kelsey students and staff had the opportunity to visit Delta Air Lines In-Flight Service Training Facility.  Delta facilitators exposed students to aircraft safety procedures, a mock evacuation from a Boeing 757 and the requirements/expectations of a future flight attendant.

A.Z. Kelsey student Erandi Coronada said, "The mock evacuation was epic! Smoke filled the cabin and we actually got to slide down the emergency slide. It was an awesome experience!"

"For many of the students, this was their first time being
on an airplane. It was great to see many of the students excited about the possibility of becoming future Delta employees after graduation," stated Tonga Releford, A.Z. Kelsey teacher.

This experience was funded by a Griffin-Spalding Partners in Education grant.

STRESSED OUT? LAUGH IT OFF!

The month of April is Stress Awareness Month as well as National Humor Month. Well did you know that laughter reduces stress? When stressed, we produce a hormone called cortisol and laughter can significantly reduce cortisol levels.

Check out these other fun facts about how laughter can improve your health:

  • Laughter Can Reduce Pain: Laughter causes us to produce endorphins, which are natural, pain-killing hormones.
  • Laughter Strengthens the Immune System: A hearty laugh decreases stress hormones and increases production of T-cells, immune proteins and infection-fighting antibodies.
  • Laughter Helps the Heart: When we laugh we increase blood flow and the function of blood vessels, which can help prevent cardiovascular problems.
  • Laughter Relaxes the Whole Body: One good belly laugh can relieve physical tension and relax your muscles for up to 45 minutes.
  • Laughter Helps You Recharge: By reducing stress levels and increasing your energy, laughter can help you focus and achieve more.

So if you are feeling stressed this is the perfect time to celebrate National Humor Month add a little humor into your daily routine. Start giggling!
