Moreland Road Elementary staff takes us back to the 1970's and 80's for drug awareness week!
|
|
|
This has been an excellent week in the Griffin-Spalding County School System!
Thank you to all that participated in Red Ribbon Week. It has been exciting to see all of the different activities and innovative ways that you have been able to share with our students the importance of being drug free. You are to be commended. Great job!
Destination Graduation was a program I heard about several years ago from Crescent Elementary principal, Beth Gaff. She had been on a SACS visit to South Georgia and returned talking about how that particular school system was able to get elementary students thinking about graduation. That idea led us to putting up the "Graduating Class of ..." banners in the hallways of all of our schools.

This week at SHS the Griffin Rotary Club took it to another level with a special presentation. The Rotary Club president, Dr. Jeff Jacobs, and other members participated in a ceremony for first-time ninth grade students. These students signed a pledge promising to work hard and graduate in four years. They also received a pin to help them remember this occasion. It was exciting to see those ninth graders set that personal four-year goal and be a part of that process. Thank you to the Griffin Rotary Club and SHS. Griffin High School will participate in the same program next week and I am looking forward to that as well.
Destination Graduation also ties in with our character education program. Your word is your bond and it is important to keep your commitments.
Finally, this is Homecoming week for Griffin High and I was excited to be asked to participate in their parade on Thursday. Homecoming is always an exciting time for me.
I know that there were many other exciting activities that went on around GSCS and I hope everyone had a great week. We educate our students and make school fun. We educate our students not only with academics but also with lessons in life. This has been a daring to do better week that will help us reach our 80 x 20 goal. GSCS WILL have an 80 percent graduation rate by the year 2020!
Have a fun and safe Halloween!

PIE PRIZE PATROL VISITS GSCS TEACHERS
Griffin-Spalding Partners In Education funded 38 grants for GSCS teachers totaling $26,817.85. Fourteen of the funded grants were for field trips and the remaining 24 were classroom grants.
More than half of submitted proposals were funded this year. This funding will benefit 13 GSCS schools with A.Z. Kelsey Academy, Jackson Road Elementary, Jordan Hill Elementary and Spalding High School receiving the largest benefits.
"Funded grants provided a clear description of the project or field trip, had clear measurable goals and were aligned with Common Core Georgia Performance Standards. Reviewers looked for grants that went beyond the ordinary to change teaching and challenge students," stated PIE Chairman, Jeff Jordan.
Grant recipients were surprised in their classrooms this week by PIE members with balloons and their check. The teachers and students were very excited. Congratulations to all of the recipients!

SAY NO TO HALLOWEEN CANDY AND YES TO PUMPKIN SEEDS!

Here is a great Halloween tip to lower your stress and sugar cravings: Enjoy some spicy, roasted pumpkin seeds. They are high in zinc and tryptophan so they'll raise serotonin, your happy and calming brain chemical. They're also a great snack to help keep your blood sugar stable and mood even.
