Jim Bearden spoke to us at the beginning of the school year about searching for better ways. One philosophy that Jim shares in his book, The Relentless Search for Better Ways is the idea that failing to recognize and acknowledge progress undermines a leader's credibility.
I never want to miss an opportunity to recognize and celebrate what is great about our employees. We are a system of givers and game changers. This was clearly demonstrated most recently during our United Way campaign.
I wanted our United Way campaign to kick-off early and end after the first two weeks of school. I wanted to take our responsibility as a pace-setter for our community seriously, and lead the challenge for other businesses to give.
We began early and ended after the first two weeks of school and 10 schools and departments had 100% participation. Our goal was $20,000 and we gave and pledged a total of $23,884 with 11 schools and departments giving over $1,000 each. Additionally, 57 employees gave or pledged over $100 and some of those pledging that amount came from those whose income is limited and sacrifice is great.
If it sounds as though I am proud, it's because I am. I am proud of each and every one who gave and pledged to help our community organizations do good work for our citizens. We can transform our community not only by providing the best education to our students but also by the generosity of our resources.
I think it is appropriate that those employees whose schools and departments had 100% participation should receive an Everyday Hero pin for their commitment. You should receive them next week. The employees who pledged over $100 will get a personal card from me. I know our people do not give for recognition; however, I believe strongly that this level of selfless generosity should be commended.
Thank you to all of the United Way school coordinators. I also want to give special recognition to Edna Aikens and Stacy Wilson for heading up this effort for our district.

Have a great Labor Day weekend everyone!

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES (SLOS)
From Shelia Mincey, Special Education and Data and Assessment Director
Student Learning Objectives are a vital component of the Teacher Keys Effectiveness System which allow a district and school to provide evidence of student growth and academic achievement in non-tested subjects. As a measure of teachers' impact on student learning, SLOs provide an additional means by which to understand value and recognize success in the classroom.
SLOs represent the most important learning for an instructional period. They require collaboration between state, district and local school staffs. They are aligned to Common Core, State and/or National standards as well as other districts and school priorities. SLOs are SMART goals. They must be specific, measurable attainable, realistic and time bound.

GEORGIA'S NEW TIERED CERTIFICATION SYSTEM
By Dr. David Hill, Director of Educator Preparation, Georgia Professional Standards Commission
The Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) passed new rules this spring to create a Tiered Certification System for Georgia educators. While many states have tiered certification systems, Georgia's new system is more comprehensive, including a Pre-Service certificate for candidates in teacher education programs, as well as an advanced tier that recognizes teacher excellence and provides opportunities for teacher leaders to take on significant instructional leadership roles in schools. Implementation will be staged over the next several years.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING (FLP) AT CARVER & COWAN MIDDLE Under Georgia's new ESEA Flexibility Waiver, Carver Road Middle and Cowan Road Middle have been identified as Focus Schools due to having an achievement gap between subgroups. To close this achievement gap, Focus Schools are required to develop a school turnaround plan. This plan consists of a Flexible Learning Program (FLP). During the 2014-15 school year, Carver Road Middle and Cowan Road Middle will offer additional support in math one day per week during a connections class. Parents will receive notification of eligibility by U.S. mail. For more information or to check your student's eligibility, please contact:

JRE & CRESCENT
Research shows a positive relation between physical fitness and academic achievement - incorporating just 30 minutes (or more!) of physical activity into the daily school routine can make children more alert and ready to learn.
Power Up for 30 is part of Georgia SHAPE, the Governor's statewide initiative to combat childhood obesity. It is a voluntary program in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education that encourages every elementary school in Georgia to integrate an additional 30 minutes of physical activity into the school day.
Congratulations to JRE and Crescent Elementary for taking on this challenge! All GSCS elementary schools are encouraged to follow their lead!
