Welcome back!

We have had an exciting three weeks!

The first week we welcomed 12 new administrators and had a great workshop focused on leadership and culture at our 2014 Administrator Symposium. During that week we also had new teacher orientation with 104 new teachers in attendance. The excitement and energy in that room was contagious. I caught myself looking around the room smiling ear to ear!

It is my pleasure to welcome all of our new staff members to GSCS where we are preparing each student for college and career by providing a quality, character and standards-based education today. I ask our returning educators to extend a hand and help our new staff members as they begin the rewarding work of educating.

The next week we had two amazing celebrations: the Education Celebration and the Classified Employee Celebration. What a great start to the 2014-15 school year!

In the Education Celebration we recognized our excellent teachers and the generosity of our Kids In Need sponsors. Standing at the podium, I saw an auditorium full of excited, caring and passionate educators committed to student achievement. With continuous increases in test scores and graduation rates I am confident this group of educators can take GSCS to the next step of success as we dare to do better!

The Classified Employee Celebration recognizes our dedicated and hard working classified employees. These employees take pride in GSCS and help take care of our most precious resource...students. Without their services providing a quality education to our students would be impossible.

Both celebrations included an excellent speaker, Jim Bearden, a successful author, speaker and consultant on achieving individual and organizational success. Jim shared that happily ever after's don't just happen. One of my favorite take-aways from his speech was, "the hands we're dealt matter...but the choices we make about the hands we're dealt matter more!" Jim challenged all of us to become real life champions and close the gap between what sounds good and what gets done.

After this first week of school, I think we are all champions! Yes, there were challenges but it's how we dealt with those challenges that matter.

Some changes were implemented for the 2014-15 school year, these changes are necessary for achieving and sustaining success at GSCS. I don't want our GSCS Values of Competency, Open Communication, Loyalty, Defined Autonomy and Respect to just sound good, I want them to be the core of who we are as an organization. The best way to lead is by example.

Thank you all for making this a good first week. Let's make next week great!

Sincerely,

COLDR
