MIDDLE SCHOOL EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH

CARVER ROAD MIDDLE

Carver Road's employee of the Month is Antoinette Richter. Ms. Richter has been instrumental in promoting the school's STEM program with Georgia Tech through our technology classes. Her dedication to education and the program has been a valuable asset to Carver Road. She is greatly appreciated!

 COWAN ROAD MIDDLE

Cowan Road Middle School would like to recognize our athletic department, coaches, and student athletes for working hard throughout the school year to develop their craft. Also for focusing on the fact that our athletes are students first and that academic achievement is the first priority!

KENNEDY ROAD MIDDLE

KRMS would like to recognize Maury Leach as the Employee of the Month. Mrs. Leach is the epitome of a team player. She goes above and beyond to assist when and where ever needed. She always has a pleasant attitude and is a great representation of Cougar P.R.I.D.E. Thank you Mrs. Leach for all of your hard work!

 REHOBOTH ROAD MIDDLE

RRMS would like to recognize Candace Peek as the Employee of the Month. As the secretary, she does so much that I almost can't express my gratitude. She is the behind the scenes person working to ensure that teachers, faculty, and administrative staff stay on target and get things done. She keeps order in a sometimes chaotic setting. She is efficient, effective, organized and most dependable. More than anything she is kind, a great listener and never complains. Candace gets very little thanks for all that she does. She has been a blessing to this school!

Happy Memorial Day everybody!

I hope while reading this message you are enjoying your weekend with family and friends as we reflect on Memorial Day and what it represents. I accept Memorial Day as a time to be thankful for all those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may continue to enjoy this country. I am extremely thankful to them and their families.

As I think about this week's events, I realize that I am thankful for many things. Earlier this week, Bus # 07-85 was hit from behind and I am very thankful that all of the students onboard are safe. In looking at a picture of the accident, I see the severity and what could have been a much worse situation.

I am thankful that the other driver in the accident is now on the road to recovery. I am thankful for our bus driver, Stephanie Harker, and the actions she took. I am thankful that our transportation department responded and followed all appropriate procedures. This situation reiterates the point that everyone's role at GSCS is important. It also emphasizes the importance of supporting transportation in their efforts to provide service that is safe, compliant and reliable.

I am thankful that once Moreland Road principal, Stan Mangham, was informed about the accident he went to the scene immediately to help manage the situation. I am thankful to Stan and assistant principal, Tabitha Lawrence, for contacting all of the student's parents in a timely manner to help alleviate their fears. I am also thankful that the parents accepted the information and continue entrusting us with their children.

I am thankful for our local law enforcement and emergency responders for being there to address the situation in a professional manner.

I am thankful that central office employees, Jim Smith, Donna Parks, Sheila Mincey, Ashley Crawford and Licia Evans responded as part of our emergency action plan.

It is easy to allow a situation like this to get out of hand and disrupt everything. I am thankful to all GSCS teachers and staff for not allowing that to happen and for keeping the focus on student learning.

Most of all, I am thankful to my Lord and Savior for the traveling mercies provided this week for our students. I hope He continues to provide those for you and yours as you enjoy this Memorial Day weekend.

Thanks everyone and have a great weekend.

PATTERSON NAMED GSCS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

The Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education named Sharlene Patterson as the 2014-15 assistant superintendent for the Griffin-Spalding County School System.

LIVING IN MAY

Excerpt from a poem by Vicki Davis, Cool Cat Teacher Blog

Lord, let me teach through May
not just biding time all day!
Each day is a gift
as is each precious one.
This may be my last chance
to reach someone!
Lord, please let me teach through May!

Lord, let me live in May
sharing knowledge all the way
Enjoying the ride and laughing a lot
Cause in this school year
May's all I've got!

I really want to leave my mark
to fan the flame and kindle a spark!
For as I use each second of time
I make a deposit in their mind.

It is now, when I unselfishly give
that now, in May,
I truly live!
HEALTHY LIVING:  GET YOUR VITAMIN D FROM THE SUN

While you're catching some rays this summer, get your vitamin D.

Did you know that vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin,
can help with depression and insomnia?

Research also suggests that vitamin D may also play a role in reducing your risk of multiple sclerosis, decreasing your chance of developing heart disease and helping to reduce your likelihood of developing the flu.

Just 15 - 20 minutes in the sun daily is all it takes to get your dose.

STATE HEALTH DATA ISSUES

State Health implemented a new portal in August, 2013. Since the implementation, State Health has experienced data issues that affect our active employees, retirees, terminated employees and employees who have transferred from other school systems in Georgia. GSCS HR is responsive within the limits of what we can control. State Health will not deal with anyone other than the affected party on some issues. Please see the guidance on the appropriate place for results.

Contact State Health at 1-800-610-1863 for the following types of issues:

  • To declare a qualifying event.  This can also be handled through the new portal on our benefits website:  www.mygscsbenefits.com
  • To Resolve "Pending"  status for the qualifying event, you must submit the required documentation (copies of: birth certificate, marriage license, social security cards, credible coverage letters for gain/loss of coverage, etc.)  When submitting the documentation, please write your social security number on each document.  Fax the supportive documentation to 1-866-828-4796
  • To Report that you received a health insurance card and you did not elect coverage for 2014

Contact Blue Cross Blue Shield if you did not receive a new insurance card for self and/or dependents:

  • To request a card call 1-855-641-4862  -OR-
  • To print a temporary card go to the bcbsga.com link from our benefits website above where you will register using your Social Security Number as your member number

We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.  It is our goal to provide excellent customer service to all GSCS employees. However, we ask for your understanding of these issues which are outside our control that are causing the bulk of these problems. We appreciate your patience in working with our office as we go through this temporary trial.
