ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH
ATKINSON
ELEMENTARY
Atkinson Elementary School would like to recognize Derek Wilder as the Employee of the Month. Coach Wilder does an excellent job every year with the Field Day activities. He serves on the school's leadership team and as an advisor for the Grizz Team. He is willing to provide assistance wherever needed to make Atkinson an awesome school.
The Employee of the Month for Beaverbrook is Linda Shiver. She has done an outstanding job organizing our CRCT. Mrs. Shiver is hard working and dedicated to our school. She always goes above and beyond in her efforts for our students, staff and school!
CRESCENT ELEMENTARY
Our Employee of the Month is Vera Spencer, 2nd grade teacher. Vera is doing a wonderful job implementing research-based instructional strategies in her classroom and meeting the needs of her students. I am very proud of Vera and her accomplishments this year. Way to go, Vera!!!
COWAN ELEMENTARY
Cowan Elementary second grade teachers are the Employee's of the Month for May. Shout out to Trina Mullis, Ketina Greene, Angela Ware and Beth Odom for coming up with a motivating plan to encourage positive behavior for the remainder of the school year. This goes to show that if you add a little spark the plan, you get a different response from kids. Love and Logic; thinking at its best!
JACKSON ROAD ELEMENTARY
Ebone' Lawson is Jackson Road Elementary Employee of the Month. Although Ms. Lawson only joined the staff in February of this year, she has jumped in and become an integral member of our team. She is committed to helping her students in any way possible, and her sunny disposition and positive attitude is contagious to all she meets. She headed up our annual variety show this year and has helped in planning a number of other school events. We are so glad Ms. Lawson is a part of our Wildcat team!
JORDAN HILL ELEMENTARY
Congratulations to JHE's Employee of the Month, Kim Holden. Kim has personally been through a lot yet she still thinks of others and always puts the students first. She keeps us informed with parent involvement and does a terrific job with Relay for Life. JHE truly appreciates her hard work, positive attitude and constant encouragement.
MOORE ELEMENTARY
It is a pleasure to announce Latoya McGee as the Employee of the month for Moore Elementary School. Mrs. McGee is always pleasant to faculty and parents, knowledgeable when questioned and drops everything to ensure the very best care for our students. Without her commitment and enthusiasm our school would be different place. Thank you for always demonstrating excellence!
MORELAND ROAD ELEMENTARY
Tabatha Lawrence is our Employee of the Month. As our testing coordinator Mrs. Lawrence has done an outstanding job all year but particularly with the CRCT. She developed a great system for the materials and Moreland Road had zero testing irregularities this year. She trained all the teachers, proctors and parents and always had a back-up plan for unexpected incidents. She assured all protocols and procedures were followed with fidelity. Thank you.
ORRS ELEMENTARY
Orrs would like to recognize Paula Sanders for all she does for our students and staff. She consistently works with students who need her help. She has organized PBIS activities, BETA Club functions, Project Wisdom lessons, works with parents who have concerns and is always available to offer suggestions to teachers and administrators. Mrs. Sanders is a valuable part of the Orrs team and we appreciate all she does each and every day.

I have two topics that I would like to discuss this week. The first is about the election on May 20. This is an historic election. It is the earliest that the primaries have occurred and the future of Georgia's public education will be greatly affected. Many individuals are running for state superintendent. Though I will not endorse any of them I will endorse the importance of educating yourself and researching the 15 candidates and vote smart! Republican candidates are: Mary Kay Bacallao, Ashley Bell, Mike Buck, Sharyl Dawes, Allen Fort, Nancy Jester, Fitz Johnson, Kira Willis, and Richard Woods. Democrat candidates are: Tarnisha Woods, Denise Freeman, Jurita Mays, Alisha Morgan, Rita Robinzine, and Valerie Wilson.
There is a lot of discussion about how powerful and how much influence the person who eventually becomes our new state superintendent will have. I do know that this person will be the face of public education in Georgia and it would be to our benefit to have someone who understands our point of view and is a friend of public education. I have been told that only 30% of educators are registered voters. I hope this is a miscalculation but the fact is that not enough of the individuals in our profession are involved in the political process. For a clear perspective, visit riseabovethemark.com to view a five minute youtube video on politics in education. Stay involved!
Secondly, I wanted to share my experience this week at Jackson Road Elementary. I attended an event called Market Day where third graders had formed groups, created businesses and were selling their products. These students had to go through all of the business processes from developing a business plan, determining their products, strategize their marketing and then completing a market analysis. The event was set up in the cafeteria and all students were allowed to purchase tickets and buy items. It was fantastic to see the excitement the students had for their products and the fun they had shopping. I want to give a special thank you to board member Pete Graham for participating and spending a great amount of time with the students. Another big thank you goes to the Partners in Education who originally funded this project and it has continued for three years now. I saw several of the PIE board members participating including Evan Stitt, Skipper Burns, Jeff Jordan and others.
I received an invitation to Market Day from one of the students who took the time to identify and introduce himself to me at Market Day. Board member Pete Graham wrote this to the student who invited him:
Dear Tristan:
I wanted to thank you again for inviting me to Market Day at your school.I enjoyed myself very much and I purchased a bag full of products that I will share with my wife and grandchildren.
All of you had good products, knew how to talk about them, and knew how to close the purchase. In talking with you, and many of your classmates, I asked questions about prices, how long it took to produce your products and how and when you would mark down your prices. Everyone had great answers, and
sometimes two or three of your classmates would come up with the answer together, and then give it to me.
Tristan, to you and all of your third grade classmates,I want to encourage you to keep up the hard work, enjoy school and always do your best. Listen to your teachers; they have lots and lots of good things to share with all of you.
I hope to see you and your classmates again soon!
Best regards, James A. "Pete" Graham
Everything is looking good and going well; now let's get ready for all the end of May activities and enjoy the ride!

HEALTHY LIVING: MOVE MORE, SIT LESS!
On average, people sit for 10 hours each day. Sitting too long ups the risk for heart disease and cancer. An American Cancer Society study showed that even getting the right amount of regular exercise didn't stop the negative effects of too much sitting. So, Mayo Clinic researchers stress the importance of moving more and sitting less. How to fit in more activity at work... - Stand during calls, meetings, lunch and any other time possible.
- Walk around for a few minutes each hour you sit. You could even start a walking group with co-workers during lunch or other breaks.
- Take the stairs instead of an elevator.
- Stretch or use fitness equipment at your desk, like a stability ball, small hand weights, tension bands or a mini stair-step machine
