Like many of you I have magazines that I read on a monthly basis. One of my favorites is NorthStar for Principals. I want to share an article with you from the new May 2014 edition titled Learning Matters: Mindsets Influence Achievement. The article states that belief about one's intelligence has a major impact on student achievement. Students, teachers and parents tend to see intelligence in one of two ways: - Fixed: Intelligence is set at birth. "Some kids are smart and some are not and that's that."
- Malleable: Intelligence can grow as a result of effort and instruction. "A growth mindset doesn't imply that everyone is the same but it does imply everyone's intellectual ability can grow."
Where is your mindset on student intelligence? Mine is that intelligence can grow and that it is not fixed at birth. One of the greatest benefits of being in public education is that we get the opportunity to see intellectual growth. Our classroom teachers and para-pros that see students growing over time have the best knowledge. I think sometimes we forget about the potential of our students. Every day is an opportunity to challenge our students to grow, to learn more and demonstrate that knowledge. We entered this profession because we believe in a growth mindset and sometimes we just need to be reminded. As you relax and enjoy your spring break think about all of the growth you are giving our students so that they are better prepared for tomorrow. Make it a great day or not, the choice is yours. Have a great break everyone!

GSCS ANNOUNCES VIRTUAL PROGRAM INFO SESSIONS The Griffin-Spalding County School System will host four informational sessions for its Virtual Program. Students in grades K through 9 who are not currently enrolled in the district can register for online courses. Information sessions will be held on May 12 at 6 pm and May 22, June 9 and July 29 at 3:30 pm in the Learning Center at 216 South Sixth Street. Required orientation sessions are set for May 29, June 13 and July 31 at 3:30 pm. Students are expected to work on their lessons 20 hours per week in grades K-3 and 25 hours per week in grades 4-9. The Virtual Program is tuition free for students in Spalding County provided they stay enrolled through October 15. Based on education research, the curriculum packages high-quality lessons with mastery-based assessments that ensure students achieve success at each and every level. With individualized learning approaches, the Griffin-Spalding Virtual Program provides the tools students need to succeed. "Parents must be involved at all grade levels," said Deputy Superintendent Denise Burrell. "Some students must increase the amount of time spent on the classes to be successful. But, this is an opportunity for those students who work best in a virtual environment." |

HAVE FUN AND STAY SAFE ON SPRING BREAK
Planning a trip to the beach or lake for Spring Break? Keep food safe by making sure your cooler stays cold enough during the drive. Block ice keeps food cooler than cubes. Plastic bottles filled with water and kept in the freezer overnight work well too. Remember that a full cooler stays cold longer than one that's partially filled, and be sure to keep frozen meat and poultry securely wrapped and away from produce or snacks.
