Greetings!
I want to take this opportunity to talk about Griffin-Spalding United Way. I have been a great supporter of United Way for many years and I am honored to serve as the chairperson this year. I recently met with the Griffin-Spalding United Way Executive Committee. At the meeting we received a pamphlet produced by the Greater Atlanta United Way that excited me. This publication listed the 2014 values that United Way will advocate for in Georgia. United Way uses these values in determining the programs they support. The values listed were: education, income, health, homelessness, basic needs and charities & volunteers. What they stated about education really caught my eye. The United Way of Greater Atlanta urged the Governor and Georgia lawmakers to: - Promote the highest of the voluntary and nationally competitive state Common Core standards and assessments in K-12 education and strengthen funding aligned with student need to produce educational outcomes so that the next generation of Georgians can succeed in the workforce.
- Fund more school and community-based interventions for youth involved in or at risk of abuse, neglect and delinquency to support healthy lifestyle choices and to address behavioral and family dysfunctions so that all young people can complete their education.
- Make more need-based financial assistance available to Georgians to complete college or a post-secondary career credential.
Education is important. While GSCS has made supporting United Way a priority, I think it's important we realize that the agencies they support help us. United Way supports us in our efforts to provide a quality education by addressing community needs that directly affect our students. If students are hungry they do not come to school ready to learn. If students live in an abusive situation they do not come to school ready to learn. If a student lives in unfavorable conditions or is surrounded by crime, they do not come to school ready to learn. United Way is one avenue that can provide support outside the classroom so students come to us better prepared for each school day. These 2014 United Way initiatives provide a better understanding of why GSCS supports United Way. Our annual United Way campaign begins this fall so look for information from Edna Aikens, Human Resources Assistant Director, who has graciously agreed to coordinate our school system efforts. Special thanks to Sara Jones, School Improvement Director, who will be our 2014 United Way Pacesetter Chair. Have a great weekend!

GSCS, along with other school districts, is continuing its efforts in developing a College and Career Academy. The steering committee's participation list has grown to 95 with 45 of those being from the business, non-education, community.
