Employee newsletter published by the
Communications & Partnerships Department                   February 10=14, 2014

Hello Everyone,

Dr. Curtis Jones

What do you think about the College and Career Ready Standards better known as Common Core?  My personal experience has shown that many people vocally against Common Core have determined their stance based on misinformation. I've even received emails from parents asking me to share their concerns with Common Core to the Georgia Department of Education...and I have.

But, the data supporting Common Core is compelling. Earlier this week I received a copy of a publication that the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education prepares annually titled The Top Ten Issues to Watch in 2014. The number one issue stated that College and Career Ready Standards (Common Core) is vital. I also know that the Partnership held a press conference the day after an anti-Common Core rally was held at the Capitol. They were joined by many businesses and educational organizations to show their support for Common Core.

Earlier this week I attended the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders (GAEL) conference and one of the guest speakers was Governor Deal.  In his remarks he said there was opposition and support for Common Core. However, only the opponents are being heard by our Legislators.

Governor Deal also said that if educators supported Common Core then they should be more vocal. I personally took this as a call to action.

The Governor's message to me was that the silent majority needs to speak up. I support Common Core because it better prepares our students for the future. I hope you do too. Below is a link to help you identify our Legislators. Please do not use school district equipment for political contacts.

I encourage you to let your voice be heard.

Earlier in the year, we screened all of our kindergarten students and placed quite a number of students in RTI for language issues. These teachers have had many extra RTI meetings with parents to determine interventions.  They are also monitoring their students to determine if they are making progress. Our wonderful kindergarten parapros provide much support for our teachers so they can meet the individual needs of our students. These teachers and parapros are to be commended for their dedication to helping our students be successful.

FEBRUARY MEANS HEART DISEASE AWARENESS!

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about prevention. Educate yourself on the dangers of heart disease and get on track to better heart health here!

Heart disease is a major problem. Every year, about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack. About 600,000 people die from heart disease in the United States each year-that's 1 out of every 4 deaths. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

Healthy choices and proper management of health conditions can go a long way to reducing heart disease, as can an informed public dedicated to helping their fellow Americans reach peak heart health.

Don't smoke. Smoking or using smokeless tobacco products are significant risk factors for developing heart disease. Many of the more than 4,800 chemicals in tobacco smoke can damage the heart and blood vessels, causing them to constrict and ultimately lead to a heart attack.

Eat healthy. Take extra helpings of fruits, vegetables and whole grains while passing on the deep-fried fast foods, bakery products and packaged snack items. Limit saturated fat - which can raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease.

Exercise regularly. You can reduce your chances of developing fatal heart disease by participating in moderately vigorous physical activity. Aim for at least 30 to 60 minutes of activity most days of the week.

Don't drink (too much). Too much alcohol can increase blood pressure and lead to heart failure or stroke. However, light to moderate drinking - which is considered to be one drink per day for women and two or less for men - can help prevent heart attacks.

Watch your weight. Being overweight or obese increases your risk for high cholesterol, high blood pressure and insulin resistance, all of which can raise the chances of developing cardiovascular disease.

Get regular health screenings. Adults should have their blood pressure checked at least every two years and cholesterol about every five years. High blood pressure and elevated cholesterol do not cause symptoms, but they can damage your heart and blood vessels.

Reduce stress. Being under stress may cause you to overeat, start smoking, or smoke more than you would normally - none of which is good for your heart.

You can reduce the risk of developing heart disease by more than 80 percent by living heart healthy. And it's never too late to adopt sensible health habits. Whether you are 17 or 77, eating right, exercising, not smoking and maintaining a healthy weight will help protect your heart.

Anthony Aikens, JHE principal, said, "Mr. Baldwin is an asset to Jordan Hill. He has yet to say no to any request asked of him. Parent involvement is so important to the success of our students and our school. Mr. Baldwin is an exemplary parent, volunteer, and role model; we are fortunate to have him."
